I think most people know how I feel about this subject... Just will add that David Bowie (along with Marc Bolan) and Roxy Music (pre-Manifesto) are some great glam rock artists that you rarely hear on classic rock stations. I don't really understand why that is the case. But yea, I agree with what someone else said earlier in this thread - to me, music that was around 20 to 40 years earlier is a helluva lot more interesting than what is out there today.
Unless I missed them: Lou Reed Velvet Underground Small Faces Humble Pie Edgar Winter Johnny Winter Trapeze

I hear ya. I've been listening a lot to Bowie's Berlin Trilogy and Iggy Pop's Lust For Life and The Idiot the last couple of months. Genius would be understating these albums. And here is a best of both worlds. <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/quaMjCl4sR4&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/quaMjCl4sR4&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>
Roar. Led Zeppelin Pink Floyd The Doors Are my top 3. And Jim Morrison is one of the best frontmen in the history of rock. Jim Morrison WAS the freaking Doors (no offense Robbie Krieger and Ray Manzarek). ZZ Top Lynyrd Skynyrd Allman Brothers Doobie Brothers AC/DC Journey (Open Arms son, have some respect for power ballads) Aerosmith Fleetwood Mac Heart Janis Joplin Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Stones Who Band Animals Zombies Santana Rush Eric Clapton The Beatles Beck Ted Nugent Foreigner Queen Boston ELO GFR BTO Moody Blues The Eagles CCR 22 Y.O. here.
A great band I loved seeing. Don't know how many times I played their LPs, cranked up. Needless to say, heavily influenced by another favorite of mine, Mr. Bowie! (great version of this tune - VVV) <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/DrgRKZNLm4M&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/DrgRKZNLm4M&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object> Sorry, but I'm trippin' out with Under Pressure... <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/UdaHCLlBkWU&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/UdaHCLlBkWU&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object> <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/faUuwRDRrqA&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/faUuwRDRrqA&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object> Enjoy!
Cant believe I missed this thread up until now. In my opinion, Classic Rock of the late 60's throught the mid 70's was musics last golden age. I will adjust and try to listen to anything, but I always end up going back to the Zeppelins, AC/DCs, Skynyrds, ZZ Tops, etc.
Mott has so many amazing songs. I don't think I've ever heard one of their songs on the radio though (maybe All the young dudes). Here's another band not too many people talk about:
The Allman Brothers is the "funnest" band to listen to for me. Aside from the rampant drug use, their music was pure with their free wheelin, blues rockin' jamming style. Too bad I wasn't alive back then to experience them live.
Any true musicians that is disciplined in art of blues or rock and roll would tell you the same thing-music nowadays generally just isn't as up to par to the "oldies" in terms of deep musical understanding. Thats why you have all these bands who think they're "good" at the guitar by just playing a couple of distorted major chords. Its sad that bands like the Foo Fighters are actually getting Grammys nowadays.
No kidding. I have a friend who says he didnt like Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffitti album I let him borrow, but the he says the new Breaking Benjamin album is "Amazing." And just so its known to all these new alt-emo bands: Simply matching the chorus line on your guitar is not considered a solo!
There's another one here! Alvin Lee was amazing with Ten Years After. I don't know if there was anyone capable of playing "faster" than Lee. Perhaps as fast, but I saw pretty much everyone and he at least shared the top in that category. Another incredible group in concert. As you can imagine, very long guitar solos. Dueling solos, more often than not. Thankfully, some remains on LP. Love Is Like Oxygen!
Well, the Allman Bros. Band is still out there. It's a different make-up, but Derek Trucks is doing his damn best to keep the old sound and he's doing a fine job. I saw them at Austin City Limits a few years ago and was blown away. I'm 22 too. I feel the same way you do, some folks won't venture past Top 40, but if they do, they'll be rewarded. Oh, and don't hate on the Foo! What they do, they do well, and Dave Grohl is a technically sound musician if you see what he's done - Nirvana, Foo Fighters' entire catalog, Probot... They wouldn't be in competition in the 60-70's, but nowadays, they're one of the most consistently good bands there is.
