The book became one of King’s more popular novels thanks to a film adaptation in 1980 from the late Stanley Kubrick starring Jack Nicholson (a film King hated so much he made his own TV version in 1997). Speaking at George Mason University recently, King announced that he has begun writing the sequel, titled Dr. Sleep. King stated that through the years since writing The Shining he had always wondered what had happened to Danny Torrance following the traumatic events he experienced. Dr. Sleep finds the emotionally scarred Danny as a 40-year-old orderly at a hospice for the terminally ill in upstate New York. His real job, though, is "to visit patients who are about to pass on to the other side and help them make the journey with the aid of his mysterious powers." Dr. Sleep also includes a traveling group of vampires called The Tribe, who suck out psychic energy from special people like Danny.
