We used to go there for a friend's birthday party every year. The last time we did it, we went bowling. To try and be funny, I used to throw the ball up real high, granny style and then it'd roll real slow down to the pins. Well, the last time any of us ever bowled there, I threw one up extra high and when it hit the lane, a huge chunk of the lane went flying across the other lanes. At that point, we quickly changed shoes and hightailed it.
Peppermint Park was cool, although the rides were very old from what I remember and probably not in the best shape. Fame City though - I remember when it opened up, there was almost zero development that far down Beechnut, now it's sprawling. What other place can you think of that had an arcade, a movie theater, putt putt, lazer tag, a bowling alley, a food court, carnival games, a roller rink, etc., all under one roof? It was a pretty amazing concept. And Fame City Waterworks was way better than Waterworld.
have you been to shapstown mall recently? i bet none of our parents would have dropped us off there while they shopped if sharpstown were like that back in the day...
It's funny reading back through this thread. It doesn't seem like many people remember Studio Circus like I did. I remember Club EFX, but that was as I got older and I quit heading that direction. I went to Club Soda once and that night we ended up walking all the way home from there. I lived at Bellaire and Gessner, so that was pretty stupid considering that I was 15. But, I was with girls and so I was supposed to do stupid things. Another place that we went when I was 16 was a place called Cars or something like that. That was when I had first started drinking, so we had a lot of fun there, but it was a different kind of fun that just hanging around and talking to girls. Probably my best club-era experience that I've had in my life was my senior year in high school when everybody went to Bayou Mama's on Sunday nights. I have very good memories of that place just like I have of Fame City. Good times.
I remember that place so well. A family friend was the architect of the place and owned part of it as well so i used to get free tockets all the time and passes to play all the games. One place i really remember was Games People Play which is by HBU it used to be so cool and stuff....remember going there when i was younger...or even that Candy Land place Peppermint park or something off of 59...that is now a mechanic shop.. and last but not least Pistol Petes Pizza....
damn, i think i've been to every place mentioned in this thread. you can take the boy out of alief but you can't alief out of the boy.
Man, Peppermint Park. My memories of that place are pretty vague, but I'm sure I went there when it was in it's decline.
Ahh....Peppermint Park. I used to go with my grandpa when I would come in to Houston to visit (I grew up out past Katy). Wasn't it near 610 North and the T.C. Jester/Ella area? I was only 6 or 7 years old but I remember it being not too far from my grandparents' house. I remember those rides. You could control going up or down with that bar that was in front of the seat, or something like that. I also remember they had these 'cars' that you could drive, but they all stradled a rail so if you drove too far to the right or the left the tires would hit.
I havent been around the Fame City area in years... Is it and the waterpark still there, or even open???
