:) I agree with you!!! I think the most gift that God gave him is his brains, even if God took back his huge body, maybe he would also be a gifted player because of his IQ of basketball!

    from DavidS:
DavidS, I do not understand the concern here. First, from all reports Yao was near 310 at the end of last season. According to WindandSea he says he weighs 320 now.

I understand what you're saying about the strength/weight ratio, but if you compare Yao's strength/weight ratio this time last year when he was 20 pounds lighter (and had virtually no upper-body mass) the equation seems to work out that he's probaly 5 lbs. overweight now (instead of 10).

Plus, body type and size do factor into the equation. If you look at Yao's lower body his frame suggests that 10 lbs. of added muscle and maybe 10 lbs. of fat doesn't seem to be earth-shattering at all.

I don't know why this extra 10 lbs. should be cause of great worry. Your posts always seem informed to me, but there are some responses in this thread that are incredulous.

George Karl and sina.com have some people here going wacko. As if Yao isn't under enough of a microscope and under incredible pressure and cultural adjustment, we now have Rocket's fans at arms for his eating ice cream?

    Everybody must get stoned indeed.

    I wasn't saying it was "earth-shattering."

I just saying that he has to be careful with his weight because of his knees/feet (big guys like him) or he'll regret it later.

    That's why Falsone is there.

But when I pointed this out (taking about the gained "fat") everyone jumped to conclusions that was calling him "fat."

    Geeesh!

All I care is that he will be in good shape thanks to Falsone, and that his body looks like it has the capacity to become excellent. Meaning, in 2 seasons, he's going to be a monster physically. Not big, but muscular.

    jshabang,

you are confusing some issues. Okay, a person can have an insane amout of muscle without showing tone. Muscle mass, is developed by performing exercises at high weight, and low reps. It makes you stronger.

Tone is developed by performing the same exercsies over and over again with a smaller weight, thus causing the fat around the muscle to be burned and showing the muscle. It also has to do with the type of fibers that develop which I won't bore you with.

Muscle mass can be confused with fat. The mass itself would have little definition, and if covered by fat, he would look fater. But that doesn't matter. Point being, Yao is not a bodybuilder. We do not need to see all his muscles. Look at olympic power lifters, they are never cut like arnold types, neither are linebackers, or good construction workers they all have alot of fat around their muscles, it makes them stronger by providing a good cushion around the muscle. As far as power goes you only need tone to impress women, and the ingnorant... sissy! j/k

If we were talking running, or biking, or purly cardivasuclar competitive sport it would be different. He would need to burn off all that fat, and get tone (which also builds endurance) Basketball is also very much a strength sport as well.

Yao having an excess of fat, does not hurt him asaide from the aforementioned knee problems. And maybe aglity, I know nothing about that cause it is not a concern of mine.

Dont worry about Yao. He has an atheltic trainer for a professional organization. Him and Yao will do whats best for Yao. In the mean time chill. Yao has gotten more power, and more size, making him more competitive. Period.

Oh, and I know because #1 - I'm pre-med and #2 - I am huge into lifting. If you are going to argue, I can have citations from my physiology books and lifting books

That last pic on wind and seas pics is the one I'm talkin about.....

I'm not lookin for a body builder.......if thats what I'm puttin off forgive me...........

The bottom line is every one has there own opinion about what they think of yao physique so far..........Me, I'm not totally impressed....no matter how much we discuss this...that last pic wind and sea had is very Cato-esque to me..and Cato while not fat, could clearly be in better shape body wise......but hey, who am i anyway:confused:

Ahh forget it.........we'll see when the season starts

You are correct but I want you to reflect that all the great endurance runners from Kenya and North Africa are thin and strong but not muscular looking in any way.

I'm with Deckard. About ten or so extra pounds would be good, but we don't want to destroy his finesse game. We only want improvements here, we don't want to be exchanging positives (strength) for negatives (sluggishness).

How could you possibly know that runners from Kenya are "strong"?

High endurance, stamina, thin, pacey...sure...But strong? I doubt it.

Hey, DavidS, the only reason I quoted you was so I wouldn't really jump somebody else. I didn't think you were calling him a fat*** lol.

I do understand what you're saying, but this thread was driving me crazy. Yao's fat, injured, lazy and slow now. That's all I'm seeing in these sina.com threads. It's like he's a Mercury astronaught orbiting the earth and we get sporadic reports that indicate he's not doing so good.

It's just a bunch of B.S. I'm happy the guy's home, bummed he'll miss a week of camp, and hope he's just feeling good. I'll be content when he gets here.

Forget the finesse crap. I rather Yao gain 20-30 muscles so he
bump and grind like Shaq does!

    Bump..BUMP..BUMP...than DUNK!
