My thinking exactly! Why does the owner tell Reeves this now? Why not wait until the end of the season? It does not make sense. Of course Reeves wanted to leave. Why would he stay if there is nothing left for him there? This is ridiculous. I know Reeves got the shaft with the Vick injury, but at the same token the team probably needed a coaching shake up anyway. The team should NOT fall COMPLETELY apart because of Vick's injury, especially the DEFENSE. But the owner really made a bad move in talking to Reeves NOW about the job situation. He should have waited until after the season.
I think that Dan Reeves deserved another shot next season before he got fired. I mean the Falcons didn't give him anything to work with this year. But that's coaching in the pros for ya. I think someone on this board once said, and I paraphrase, if you get credit for the sun, then you can't complain when they b**** at you because of the rain.
Here's the only possible scenario for Reeves' firing: Arthur Blank, sitting in his office LAST week, decides he really, really doesn't want Dan Reeves back next year. The problem is, if Reeves wins the next 4 games (with a healthy Vick), there will be moderate pressure on Blank to keep him around next year. The media and fans will collectively voice their displeasure with Blank's decision, which is bad for PR. So, Blank decides to wait, ultimately betting the farm that Reeves will NOT win any games and hang himself with his tight noose, thus making the decision to fire Reeves neat and tidy for him. Then... along comes last Sunday night, when Atlanta (with Vick) goes out and beats Carolina, a playoff team. Suddenly, Blank sees the possibility that, "Hey, maybe Dan CAN win the next couple games. Uh, oh..." Thus, 3 games before the end of the season, Blank goes on a (somewhat desperate) preemptive strike against Reeves to stop the "PR bleeding" before Reeves can make a solid statement for staying as head coach next year. Somewhat ingenius. Still a bad PR move, but since Reeves was going to be fired, anyway, Blank stopped the inevitable uproar before Dan could win any more games and help his cause.
II already believe Michael is one of the best quarterbacks ever. You're right, its to early to call him the best ever, but he's already accomplished one thing no other quarterback has. The only reason I can't defintely say he's one of the best ever is because he's only had one full season. But have you ever seen a quarterback make the plays he can?
Like the 70+ yard run against Minnesota last year in overtime for the win in which he made two Vikings hit each other.
Jamal Lewis has accomplished one thing no other running back has, is he one of the best RB's ever? Vick definitely has the potential to be considered so, but there's such a thing as "body of work" to be taken into consideration.
I understand that, but its not just hype why this guy is on television all the time. He's probably the most exiting athlete to watch since Michael Jordan was young.
Michael Vick makes his first start of the season and rushes for nearly 150 yards against a Carolina Defense that wouldn't allow a RB to accomplish that same feat. This kid is already a superstar, there is no question about his talent, it's only the potential of where his talent can take his team.
So this one play makes him one of the best ever. If he keeps up this excitement, agility, playmaking, speed, etc. over the next 5-10 years then yes he will be considered one of the best but as for now he's just a good, exciting player.
So setting the second highest rushing total for a quarterback in history, and the highest since the merger, and becoming the first to win a playoff game in Greenbay just makes you good. He's already a great player, it will take longevity to say he's one of the best ever. You can already see the difference he makes by being on the field. Right now I would take Payton Manning, Steve McNair, McNabb, or any other quarterback ahead of him for next season. Bo Jackson didn't have longevity, so in the seasons he played was he just good? And as far as your comment, "so this one play makes him the best ever", you asked me what has he done that other quarterbacks can't do? Can you name a quarterback who can make plays like that?
When did I ask "what has he done that other quarterbacks can't do?" I simply asked for one of his plays, that's all. Please do not put words in my mouth. As somebody said before it was really Vick that won that game in Green Bay but since he was the starter and you all want to give him the credit then fine, he won it. What does second highest have to do with anything? So since Randall Cunningham ran for the second most yards by a quarterback in a season he's one of the greats? To end this whole thing, good or great it cannot be proven because it is all a matter of opinion and opinions cannot be proven because they are just that, opinion and not fact.
You asked for one of his plays, and then you said that I gave that example to prove he's the best ever, when I only answered your question. Don't put words in mouth. You're right on matter of opinions, mine just happens to be right.
Dan Reeves is cursed. He is the Gene Mauch of professional football. Greatest coach ever to not win the big game.
All I know is that fantasy football is fun again for me as I finally have my starting 2 QBs in Vick and McNair.
