Then how did he get caught trying to create a Rice e-mail address? Shouldn't students with valid SS#'s be eligible?
In order to get an email, all you need is a valid RICEID. To log-in to the account the first time, it checks against the official records whether that person is actually "in the system." Montano got an account, but could not log-in to it. When Montano complained, he was sent the Registrar's office, and they are the ones who notified the police.
He was staying on the floor right below mine, but i dont think i ever saw him. The guy had to be mental, if he brought attention to himself by complaining about his email. it's still pretty impressive how he duped everyone for several weeks.
http://www.houstonpress.com/issues/2002-11-14/feature.html/1/index.html The Houston Press has a long feature on this guy this week.
Getting a diploma is so much easier than anyone could imagine. You can even pick one up at graduation, get your name called as you walk across the stage, and then do it again to get a few more degrees. A transcript is a little more difficult. You may have to fake that. Sitting in on classes is easy. Sitting in on labs is more diffcult, but if the teachers know you, then you could do it. I'm trying to imagine how you could get on the transcript list to. That would be tough. Because billing is involved.
Obviously not impossible, but I don't think it's easy to do at UT. They check your transcript, then put your name for graduation, etc. That was a bittersweet article. We've all wanted to belong to something one way or another; he was just bold enough to do it. Of course, I'm not in denial that I'm not good enough to play quarterback for the Longhorns. He seems like a decent kid, though I question the stealing of 7000 dollars. Stating the obvious, and not to sound elitist, but he's not Rice material. C'est la vie.
I think I heard a story about someone who faked being a football player and actually played for a few years. I could be wrong about that. But I swear it happened. Then he got busted. Could have been in Texas too. He was like 30 years old or something and wanted to keep playing so he did.
You are correct sir. http://www.tower.org/library/weaver.html The ethical hits just keep on coming -- UT's baseball program just got put on probation. Last year's season now deserves an asterisk.
Azadre, The Rice Dean of Admissions was the pitcher on my intramural softball team. You'd better be nice to the Trader. Sorry it took me so long to respond to your email -- your activities look solid, but without your SAT and SAT II scores and final class rank it's hard to tell where you stand. Good luck.
I can't say the Weaver incident was an ethical hit. What other ones have there been, lately? Weaver incident was being a dumbass hit. They dismissed him immediately. The Tripp Couch Fiasco had no effect on what happened on the field. The only asterisk is in the head of the losers i.e. everyone not Texas last year in baseball.
In addition to recruiting violations, you also have the Tim Moss asterisk: Texas player charged in assault AUSTIN, Texas — University of Texas baseball player Tim Moss has been arrested and charged with assault causing bodily injury and evading arrest. Moss, 20, and Vernon Turner, 20, were allegedly found stomping a Texas freshman in Moss's apartment complex. Collin Evans, 19, suffered several cuts and a swollen face from the attack, police said. If convicted of the assault charges, Moss could face up to a year in prison and $4,000 in fines. The evading arrest charge carries a maximum sentence of six months in jail and a $2,000 fine. Texas athletic department spokesperson Sharon Rhodes said the school will not comment on Moss's status on the team until the case is resolved. The Longhorns won their first Big 12 Conference title with a 48-14 overall record. Moss, a second baseman, has a 384 batting average this season and leads the Longhorns with 98 hits, 61 runs scored, seven triples and 36 stolen bases. Omar Quintanilla asterisk: University of Texas sophomore infielder Omar Quintanilla will have his eligibility reinstated on Sunday, March 10 after making restitution on benefits received and sitting out a total of 21 games, the NCAA announced. Quintanilla played in four games in a fall league in Caseta, Mexico, outside of his native El Paso, and had received five round-trip airline tickets to attend the games and a team postseason banquet. The NCAA ruled Quintanilla must sit out the four games equivalent to what he played in Mexico as well as 30 percent of the current season (17 games) for the benefits received. He will have to pay $1,394.25, the cost of the airline tickets, to a charity of his choice before he can play. "I made a mistake, and I'm sorry that my team has had to deal with this issue," said Quintanilla, who hit .367-2-37 in 196 at-bats last season. "I plan on taking care of what I need to do in order to return to my team as soon as possible." This isn't even mentioning the ethics problems Garrido has had in the past at Fullerton or the laughable academic standards to which UT athletes 'adhere to'.
Not recruiting Lance Berkman out of your own backyard because "his bat was too slow" still hurts, doesn't it?
This is the only thing I care about in regards to the violations: As for Moss, I would have done the same in his position. If anyone tocuhed my girlfriend, they'd get the crap stomped out of them as well. Running from the cops isn't the right thing to do, but I guess he panicked. I guess everyone hates UT, not just ATM and OU.
