He made it to the NBA, an achievement in itself, huh?

Carter had all the tools to become one of the greats. But just like some have stated already, he just didn't put in the work necessary to get over the top. I say this because it just didn't seem he had the passion for the game and solely relied on his athleticism all those years.

I can't knock the guy for wanting to be at his graduation when many of his peers can't even finish 2 years of undergrad, but it was a Game 7!!!! :(

I thought Carter hit more game winning shots(buzzer beater) than Kobe ...no? I'm not a big fan of vc but let's be fair...he never get to play with a prime shaq.

What does not playing with Shaq have anything to do with whether or not Carter is overrated?

Carter is a big-time underachiever, but it is too hard to say he is the biggest of all-time. If you have not read the Basketball Book by Bill Simmons, you should. He talks about Vince a lot, his potential and his big-time underachieving.

That's who always comes to mind for me. He could have been the greatest power forward of all time.

I think if DC became the greatest power forward of all time he would have been eclipsed by another great underachieving power forward as well--Rasheed Wallace.

Not even close to the biggest underachiever. His North Carolina teammate Rasheed Wallace is worse.

Whats the criteria, a player that plays in the the league 6+ years, is solid not spectacular but expected to be outstanding, & never had his career derailed by injury or scandal?

I don't understand some of choices, except maybe Stephon Marbury and Derrick Coleman.

Vince Carter's career is hardly a disappointment for the fact that he made it to NBA, wasn't a bust, and is considered one of the better SGs in the league of the last 10 years. Though, he probably could've improved his game, but can't most players do that. Then, do and still aren't that much better.

He's not a disappointment in the sense that his career is very similar to other shooting guards and wing players who had great careers, but didn't have the luxury of being on any great squads... The players who I am refering to are Dominique Wilkins, Pete Maravich, George Gervin, Alex English, Earl Monroe (in a sense, before he got to the Knicks), Tracy McGrady, and Mitch Richmond. They are either stuck with the underachieving label or not being able to produce in the playoffs or turn their teams into winners.

Yet, most high-scoring guards/wings are not going to be on teams title teams produce titles without adequate big men and/or a deep roster. The only two I can think of who have done so, is Rick Barry and Michael Jordan. Those are the only two I can think who have one titles without an all-star caliber center or power forward. NBA historically speaking has favored big men and deeply talented teams, something most of the players above didn't have most of their careers or very late. You can't tell me that their careers would be exactly the same, if they went from playing with the Hawks or Bullets to the Lakers or Celtics. I'd imagine a few of those players would be near the top 10 or 15, if they won more titles with a greater franchise (with the same numbers they have now).

Also, I thought Antawn Jamison was all of the rage coming out of North Carolina.
