Sometimes it's hard to have everyday face to face conversations with my friends that live in Chicago, San Francisco, Austin, Dallas, Santa Cruz, etc.

Why don't you get off this message board and interact w/ people in person instead while you're at it?

Talking to people online and in person are not exclusive of each other.

I agree about all the gadgets and such. The annoying thing about myspace was people would put so much crap on their pages and it was so disorganized and an eyesore. Facebook was to the point. But everyone keeps adding more of these gadgets and such, it's becoming more and more the same.

I must be completely r****ded or just old, but I really don't get facebook.

Without sounding like a complete idiot (oh wait I just did :p ), could someone tell me how it works.

I know how to post a profile and all of that, but how do you add friends and stuff?

Well, first of all it's got stuff that myspace has as well: you can create common interest groups you can join, so you can find people who share your interest. Stuff you entered in your profile is searchable, so you can find other people who like the same movies you like, etc.

There are big differences, though. Facebook lets you manage your privacy settings and find friends according to what networks you join (though friends don't have to be in the same network). For example, say I'm in three networks: Marquette University (school), City of Milwaukee (geographical location), and Kohl's (company). Once you're in your networks, you might choose to make your profile closed off to the general public, give a full view of your profile except your contact info to your work and school networks, give a more limited view of your profile to your geographical region, and give a full view of your profile including contact info (like your cell) to your friends. But that's just an example... privacy settings are COMPLETELY customizable. If you wanted you could let people only see photos and nothing else (don't know why you'd want to, but whatever). The point is it's infinitely more customizable and user-friendly than myspace as far as privacy goes... with myspace, your profile is either viewable to the public, or only viewable to your friends. There is no privacy customization.

There's also a news feed (which you can opt out of) which gives you updates on changes your friends have made to their profiles, pictures they've posted, etc. Naturally, you can customize the feed to show you more of the type of stuff you want and less of the stuff you don't. This way you don't always have to look at individual profiles to see if someone's changed something.

Also, whenever you become friends with someone, you can designate your relationship to them. For example: co-worker, classmate, family, teammate, former or current bf/gf, etc. Then you can go to your friends list, and it'll filter your friends list if you just wanna see a list of your co-workers, for example. You can also organize your friends list by most recently updated profile, so you know at a glance who's changed stuff.

The event feature is great too... good way to organize things. You invite people to an event, and they can RSVP yes, no, or maybe. The event profile has location info, time, contact info, etc. Anyone invited to the event can see a real-time list of who will or won't be there. Facebook will then remind you a day before the event and the day of the event about it. It also reminds you about people's birthdays.

And the coolest feature of all, IMO, is photo tagging. When you post photos, you can "tag" each person in the photo by dragging a translucent box over them, and picking out that person's profile. Once your photo is tagged, a person looking at the photo can hover their mouse over the person and see their name, or they can hover their mouse over any of the names at the bottom of the photo, and the translucent box will appear so they can see where the person is in the photo. Best of all, this way you can see all the photos of any friend of yours that's been tagged in one location, no matter who posted them, without doing any searching.

That's the major stuff I can think of. I don't spend a lot of time on it per se, but I do check it for a couple minutes multiple times per day. Great way to keep in contact with friends you thought you'd never talk to again.

Facebook and Myspace are both for kids. I'd say facebook even more cuz its more school based, as compared to myspace where any old body that wants to show their face can get on. ..FOR ME, I know why I get on - to check out some hot a _ _. No way I get on myspace or facebook SOLELY to keep in contact with friends and family (though I only joined both by getting talked into it by friends), gotta have some other appeal about it to hold interest.

Still overall, myspace is like downtown nightlife...its where everything was happening and everybody went, until it got "too ghetto". Then the "cooler" people sought out other areas to hang and kept it more exclusive to a certain crowd...They found facebook where its a more cleaner image and more "regular" like.

Facebook does have a way cleaner presentation, more customizable, more perv-proof, safer for high schoolers, better features, cooler groups, etc...Put it this way - I let my family know I have a facebook photo album, but no way I've let them know I have a myspace account.

But for what I get on for, straight on to the whoring, I'm still okay with myspace for that at the moment :D

I pretty much stopped using FB after they opened it for the general public (middle/high schoolers). It used to be cool when it was exclusively for college kids where you would need your school email to sign up.

You realize facebook opened up to non-school people a year or more ago, right? It's open to people with no network, people with a network based on location (geographical), people with a network based on where they work, etc.

I hear more and more employers are looking into myspaces. Luckily my myspace page was neat and clean. :D

I think that somebody should start up a Clutchfans group on Facebook. I also just discovered Facebook, but don't want to join a bunch of lame groups. It would be kinda cool to be able to see other clutchfanners, etc.

So come on guys--who will start one? What if Ladi_Di agrees to join???? :)
