Would you support such a unit? Politic shut it down and I think we need to bring it back. We now have two shootings of cops from veteran who were radicalized. There was a little known intelligence unit in the dept of homeland and security, founded under Bush in 2004, that were responsible for tracking these possible radicalization of veteran and providing warning to law enforcement. While it doesn't seem like a terrible idea on the surface, I'd prefer we actually commit to taking care of our vets when they come home. It's such a disgrace that only 10% of our defense budget goes towards veterans issues.
Taking care of veterans is socialism. Creating and heavily funding a new secret police would get more support in Congress, from the contractors that would supply them, and from voters.
I think we should be doing both, but we aren't doing either of them today. However, it's very unlikely that Republican (or Dem) congress is going to approve a massive increase in services for Vets. They may talk all they want about Vets, but they have provided very little support to them. It's more likely that they would support bringing back this unit - it has a much lower budget and was fairly recently an active unit of DHS. If we are concern about radicalization of individuals here in the US, this is a tool set we should be allowing the government to have. It's quite easy for people to voice strong opinion and blame this group or that group (which is often inaccurate and furthermore doesn't solve anything), but when there is something that can be done to help, all are quiet. If we do not support detection and services to potentially troubled people, we should be ready to accept the consequences of them.
Here's another, cheaper, more humane idea: take care of your vets who were the ones on the front line while you were yelling from your couch, and no one will be able to manipulate them. You printed money out of thin air to wipe Iraq off the map based on a hunch. I'm sure you can sort out the money that vets need to deal with mental conditions that are inseparably linked to engaging in warfare. The added bonus is you will not have created a department which, like every other similar department in history, will end up being more radicalized than the radicals it seeks.
