I don't think calling him out on a BBS was the best approach. Because his access to the web is infrequent, he doesn't have as much opportunity to defend himself, which will make it appear as though he is being unjustly attacked. I think the mod may have been wise to take it off the boards (depending), though the content of the response makes it look like he did it for all the wrong reasons. If I were the mod, I'd probably drop the guy an email to ask if it was plagarized. I'd try to handle it with him directly on some private channel. If he ignored me, I'd notify his school and college about it. Then, if they didn't care, I'd drop it. It isn't like he should be paying you royalties for it or something, afterall.
you're right Juan. I didn't know the full story of his service etc when I posted that. If I knew he was out of the country etc. I would have contacted him in another way.
Yeah, He ripped you off...and it is slimy of him, sending him a private email is best.... But why even care? DD
If you could absolutely prove your case...then the admin of that other forum should remove his thread entirely or else he/she is being irresponsible for allowing it to continue as if this guy wrote it. I don't care who he is. He obviously has no problems plagarizing and noone has the right to do that.
DD - because you spent some time and energy creating something that was yours. That is something I made with my own time and effort. AND you see someone else taking credit for in a place (thefiriingline forums) where thousands of ppl pay respect to him as an American hero. They spend good time and money sending care packages to a person that misrepresents himself by taking my work.
Yeah, it's his own hardwork, it's not like he's ripping off software or something...right? RM95 beat me to it. Totally hypocritical remark by DaDa.
I agree with Jeff. There are two equally horrible things going on here. I think you've gotten a lot of good advice on dealing with the soldier that ripped you off. I would be tempted to look for a web outlet in order to plageurize the administrator's of the firing line board. Start by doing it on their own website. Then when they get upset, tell them that it's excused because you support our troops, and we are in a time of war. Then suggest that maybe stealing other people's ideas should be wrong no matter who does it.
I've got a new game coming out early next month for xbox and it's called "STICKY BALLS". Sound familiar, Dada? It should because I duplicated it from code taken off one of your servers. You like that?
It's sad that they guy's work got ripped off, but he's not making a living of off his high school speech is he? Let's get practical here.
I would just write him a private note that says, "I don't care who you're trying to fool. I wrote that essay. If you have real honor, you'd fess up to it, but then again an honorable man wouldn't have stolen my work in the first place. You're a grown man and I shouldn't have to tell you what to do, so I won't. If you'd like your little lie to remain hidden, if you'd prefer to fake your way to respect than stand on your own, that's your own decision as a man. I won't expose your ruse. But just remember that *I* know you did it. I know you're a thief and a liar. You can either admit your mistake or live with your lie. Just know that that essay's true author will never be able to take you seriously again." And feel free to plagiarize that.
How did the guy even find your work to copy? Do you think he surfed to your site and took it? Or, is it someone you know perhaps?
it's actually published in a few publications, so I do have it copyrighted. he must've read one of the publications.
Mulder's right; copywrite makes it different. Send them one of these: http://www.utsystem.edu/ogc/intellectualproperty/contract/cease.htm (note, you may want to make sure you have Crash Course's permission to use their letter ).
