if it's a dry heat, i wouldn't mind. but in Houston, there's no such thing as a dry heat. Humidity FTL.

    Extreme cold.

In Houston, there are no excuses for not going to work when there is a heat wave.

There is with an arctic front! :D

    Sharif: What's up, black man?
Caine: Coolin'. Man, why you got that ******* hood on your head, lookin' like the Grim Reaper?
Sharif: It's cold out here, my brother. You know us black folks not used to this cold air. We a tropical people, you understand? Let them Europeans deal with this madness.
Caine: Then why your tropical ass sittin' on the ******* cooler?
Sharif: To keep you fools from drinking this poison. That's why.
Caine: Man, you better get your Shelenkem-Shilom ass up off this box and pass me a motherfu**in' brew.

No, this thread is about extreme heat and cold, not about the weather in Houston today. I didn't even put on a sweater today. The only problem today is all the car wrecks. I reserve the right to b**** about actual extreme cold weather. Like my first winter in Chicago when it was the coldest it had been for a century. The wind was blowing so strong (it only blows in the winter in Chicago  ) that you would have to literally crawl along the brick walls to keep from being blown along the ice, the snot in your nose would freeze and even your eyeballs feel gummy. You can't feel your hands or feet. And all this despite 3 shirts, 2 sweaters, long johns, lined pants, scarf, tuque, hood, winter coat, 2 pairs of socks, waterproof boots and heavy gloves. I'd rather risk heat stroke in 110 degree sun then have my eyes freeze in my skull.

98 degrees?! You should have made this extreme cold vs mild heat.

I was thinking more on the lines of 120 degrees. NOW that sucks. Hence why I voted for cold.

Having lived in the middle east and having those damn temps every year. I must say, the heat SUCKS! thank god there aren't any electricity bills in Saudi.

I'll take three months of Houston heat over three days of this icestorm crap any day of the week. I hate cold weather. That is why I live in Houston. I can cool down when I'm hot much easier than I can warm up when I'm cold. Plus I love it when the ladies wear next to nothing in the Houston summertime.

I was born and raised in Houston, but I've moved away. And having lived in the cold now somewhat, I definitely prefer the heat. Based on my job and activities, I can choose to avoid the ridiculous heat if I want to.. and when I go play sports or whatever, I can retreat to a cold shower and A/C afterwards.

Aside from affecting comfort, cold also affects other things. Morning car warming up...shoveling sidewalks and driveways..brushing off a car and scraping the ice off the windshield... more accidents on the road due to people not being a little careful. etc.

I hate sweating but it's genetics that I sweat bullets without much exertion. I'm not in the best shape I used to be, but even when I was in great shape with maybe 8% body fat I would sweat as though I were running a marathon. The same is true for when I roam around in the cold weather. Only instead I end up sweating bullets that make me feel colder then intended. All that said I choose cold weather, because cold weather in Texas is 30ish degrees which is bearable. Cold weather with no rain or ice storms still means I can go out on weekends, whereas 120ish degree weather is too scorching hot to even want to get out at all. Either way both suck. Give me windy 70ish degree weather any day of the week. :D

In cold weather, another layer can always be added to keep warm. gloves, hats, scarves, etc. can be added. In hot weather when you are outside away from water, there isn't much you can do. It is going to be miserable and there is no real porection.

Therefore Extreme hot is worse than extreme cold.

I loathe cold weather and everything associated with it. I am the real-life version of Heat Miser. I don't like going outside if it is under 50 degrees (although the real Heat Miser said, IIRC, 60 degrees).

do y'all sweat ice crystals or something? i assume we're talking about being outside in the weather (since you can make inside any temp you want) and i don't see how these apply. the colder it gets the more clothes you can wear and effectively feel much warmer than it actually is. at some point, it's just hot and nothing you wear or do cools you down.

except sweat, which just gets annoying, which is why i'm with imad2k on this. i hate sweating and i sweat easily (anything over 85 and i'm screwed) which is one of the only reasons i don't like living in houston (or Texas in general). 6-7 months of 90+ degree heat and a few where going over 100 isn't uncommon (although this last summer was mild) just sucks because you can't change the fact that it's hot. i love the feeling of cold air hitting my face so i love the month or so of cold weather we get each year in houston. granted, i don't want my eyes frozen into my skull either, but give me the 20s and some snow every once in a while before the 90s and 100 degree heat every once in a while.

As someone who runs pretty much everyday, I prefer the cold. Its seems easier to breathe as the air seems crisper, even though it prob. is not. I went running in about 30 degrees weather yesterday, and around mile 5, when you are out of breath- that cold blast of wind is mighty refreshing. On the downside, I couldn't feel my face after about 1 hour of running through that weather.

When the temperature exceeds body temperature, the wind [IMG] ahhhhh...

From my perspective, the heat is oppressive. I never want to go outside anywhere when the temprature is higher than 100 degrees. Last night I walked to the supermarket and it was plesant as long as I was wearing my coat.

That's what it looked like for me last week while I was on the 82-degree beach in Brazil... :(

I picked heat. I can handle Houston summers.

I'm not used to having a centimeter-thick layer of ice on my car in the morning and nothing to chip away at it with. Too much for me. I'll take getting into my car while sweating profusely and waiting impatiently for my car to cool down.

Oh, my car doesn't have heat, so that might explain my stance. Nonetheless, ice is a b**** to deal with.

And yes I'm just an inexperienced southerner when it comes to ice.
