I mean, the proper reaction is to call a HazMat team. They had like 15 minutes before things happened--hazmat wasn't gonna be there by then. They were evacuating, as they should have been.

So I'll have to disagree that they weren't trained appropriately. If you're saying they should have been fully HazMat trained with appropriate equipment, that's different...but not really possible

Or maybe there shouldn't be a ton of explosive material being stored in a residential area being serviced by a volunteer fire dept?

Accidents like this are nearly always preventable. Unfortunately, it usually takes accidents like this to get the right protocols in place.

I don't expect much to change from this. We saw how little has changed after the gulf oil disaster. Again, another preventable accident.

Industry fights regulation, and we have a system where "smaller" gov't is more popular. The whole reason some of us fight for regulation is to prevent these kinds of things. Whether they be accidents or financial meltdowns.

To those who think progressives are dancing on the grave when our whole objective is to prevent this stuff in the first place - well, I think it's safe to say they are living in some form of bizarro world with a need to feel right vs. admitting they were wrong. Kinda scary.

What you can be sure of is that no profit-seeking company is going to change what they do to avoid a similar disaster unless it results in a net increase in profits.

So it's best to take these tragedies seriously and force those people into making changes for the better.

That's what we need! We need public funds to help secure and protect PRIVATE businesses!

Hell, while we're at it why doesn't the city pay them to conduct business there!

More "I told you so" grave dancing from you. You are showing zero respect due to the loss of innocents' lives. Probably because you're happy it happened to your political enemy -- that is truly disgusting and disrespectful. Life's not just some political game, son.

And like a broken record, mcmark tries to pile on to build credibility for his side's losing battle. I suspect you're happy about the loss of life, as well, since you view things as a black and white political game, also. I'll tell you what I told RM95 and Sweet Lou -- you're grave dancing unless you can articulate what regulations would have been present in other states (besides Texas) that would have prevented this tragedy from happening. So until you're able to do that, you're simply grave dancing.

Thanks for the advice. In response I will build a time machine and travel back 40 years. I will create initiatives that increase the cost of labor but in return get a massive downturn in not only the rate of on the job deaths but also the total number by close to half.

    OK done!

The dead people's families would sure hate to increase labor so their family members wouldn't have to die.

Thanks for taking care of that for us. I'd be dead right now if it wasn't for you.

And I'll tell you what I've told you before. You're a piece of **** for saying anyone is grave dancing over this tragedy, especially towards people with family in the area, you weak muther****er. The only person's grave I'd ever dance on is yours, and only because I wouldn't mind getting my piss and **** on my feet.

Ok so now you're cursing. I guess that's your reflexive response when you can't defend yourself otherwise.

You're grave dancing unless you can articulate what regulations would have been present in other states (besides Texas) that would have prevented this tragedy from happening. So until you're able to do that, you're simply grave dancing.

And everytime you post, God is one step further from wiping us all out because he hates himself for allowing a **** like you to be born.

More insults, which is simply another sign that you can't defend yourself for what you've done.

I'm not afraid to call people out for being disrespectful, which you have been in this thread by grave dancing.

I don't think that's true. Enlightened profit-seeking companies will sacrifice some profit for risk-mitigation. The company that owned the fertilizer plant is now financially ruined. Not only did they lose the asset in an explosion, it'sgoing to get sued by the families of everyone who was killed and every property owner who got damage, plus fines from all the regulatory bodies. I doubt they have insurance enough, especially considering that they didn't follow the existing regulations. That business would have been wise to spend enough to avoid explosions.

And companies do. I visited my company's power plant recently and they showed us the stuff they do for safety protocols and it is quite extensive. The big safety cultures in companies like Shell are done to avoid these kinds of costly catastrophes. Even BP spent a lot of extra money to avoid disasters. It's an easy choice for these big companies because they are big enough that they know it's going to happen at some time somewhere in their organization. A little fertilizer plant can hope it'll happen to some other poor sucker instead of them and take the profit. But, that's not the wisest path for a company to take. I hope the other fertilizer plants in Texas take a hard look a what risks they've implicitly taken in their operations and consider what they'll lose if they lose the gamble.

Especially when people have family members who were affected by this. I sincerely hopes someone breaks his ****ing fingers so he can never type again.
