I didn't claim what I take is more natural than coffee. Its about not having to drink milk or use sugar. These herbs I can ingest in pill form, so its better than having to drink milk which is not natural to the body. Same with using sugar in your coffee.

The health scale goes like this...

White tea > Green tea > Oolong tea > Black tea > Black Coffee

Black coffee has very few antoxidants when compared to its sister drinks and things like fruits n veggies... and it is only the "greatest source of antioxidants in the american diet" since we drink so damn much of it.

Kick the habit, not worth it.

i've actually never even had a sip of coffee before......but i know its taste well from eating lots and lots of tiramisu......i don't drink coke or other soft drinks either......i get my caffeine fix from several ounces of chocolate per day....

anyways, this whole topic reminds me of my days in college.......at one point i had this nerdo computer science roommate named lucas......dude would stay up 37 hours at a time doing his computer projects....debugging, beta testing, etc......he probably got about 4-5 hours of sleep per day on average.....and he was completely addicted to pepsi...

one day i challenged him to go one week without any pepsi......he accepted...

Days 1-3 were okay and he seemed to be his normal geeky self...

Days 3-4 there was a noticeable edginess about him and he was sleeping about twice as much as usual....

Day 5 he started eating as much chocolate and candy as he could find and was constantly trembling...

Day 6 still trembling, he went to the store and bought 4 two-liter bottles of pepsi for future anticipated consumption and then slept about 12 hours straight....

Day 7 he slept practically the entire day with several periodic wake-ups with a look of severe desperation......an hour before the one-week countdown he actually poured his first glass of pepsi.....he sat there sweating and fidgeting watching the seconds count off the clock until he could take his first gulp....

he finished all four of those pepsi bottles by the end of the next day...

That's cool, but what do you have to say about what Max said on page two?

    Who cares? :)

Seriously, if you enjoy coffee and it's not controlling your life...then keep on keeping on. It's not killing anyone else. It's not harming anyone else.

If you don't like it...or don't want to drink it...that's awesome, too.

The drugged spider web construction is extremely fascinating.

Well....I respect his opinions on nutrition, but I find his take here to be along the lines of the misconceptions about coffee I posted earlier. I'd read a ton about the health benefits but didn't feel like searching for the relevant info. We've talked about the benefits of coffee in nursing school.

Soooooo....while I am also aware of the benefits of tea....I'm still curious as to his take. Does he just think what you posted is false or something?

Very few of those studies do I put much weight in, and considering the fact you can get the benefits of coffee without all the other drawbacks and side effects from other sources, why go that route?

You're not in a "comatose state" unless you've already got some sleep management issues. I think most juices have enough sugar content that they would give you sufficient energy, especially if you could add a hot breakfast sandwich or pastry to it. I try to eschew coffee because I gave myself pretty serious chest-pains once mainlining Vivarin and Mountain Dew once in college, I'm pretty obese and I imagine too much concentrated caffiene would aggravate whatever prospective heart problems I've already got coming in my later 30s and 40s.

Oh...you're right. He's a personal trainer and knows a ton about this stuff, I'm sure.

Donny, I didn't mean that as a slight to your opinion on this. It's your job and I'm certain you've forgotten more about it than I'll ever know. I was really poking at the relative importance of my own opinion on this.

Some of you act like drinking a couple of cups of coffee is like shooting heroin.

    No offense taken.

The thing about these studies is I see glaring holes in the "no other factors" arena.

It reminds me of the guys who claimed aspartame was a guaranteed cancer causer after they basically made rats live in piles of it 24/7... these studies can sometimes be very misleading.

i used to drink a couple of large coffees in the mornings, total probably close to 24 oz, but i've switched now to espresso, a double ristretto pull, perhaps with a dollop of foam on top (macchiato). one brown sugar cube.

during the day i drink nothing else but water, sometimes with lemon. i may have a decaf espresso after lunch. i cook most evenings, and find i really can't do it w/o a glass of wine- dinner is pretty much the same, so i probably drink at least a half-bottle of wine every night.

i'll have maybe a beer or two per month. ditto spirits, although that probably goes up quite a bit when i'm at CES.

Maybe, but the physical effects of caffeine addiction aren't nearly that strong, nor do they last nearly that long. Whatever your roommate experienced, it wasn't due to any physical addiction / withdrawl.

Anyone have anymore information about guarana and ginseng?

Also, I find myself pretty sluggish after lunch, which is a natural reaction following carbohydrate consumption. The advice usually given is to make sure to include some source of protein in your lunch/afternoon snack, but this doesn't seem to help.

I don't want to drink another cup of coffee in the afternoon because it interferes with my sleep and would probably lead to greater dependency.

So I need a milder afternoon pick-me-up. Suggestions?
