I think in that particular Chinese proverb, God is more appropriate. Heaven is a place. God is the master of Heaven. So Heaven could not rack and test his will and labor his bone and sinew, but God can, right?

Thanks Pryuen. The translation is accurate and smooth.

The paragraph on his ankle bones showing numerous hairline fractures is indeed worrisome. I do think he should also consult those sports science experts. He probably lands on his ankles when running, which is not a good habit.

His shoe design is also questionable. Like it or not, Nike does put more effort in designing their shoes versus Reebok. Yao really needs to have a serious discussion with Reebok and force some issues. His health should come before the image of an corporate. And I'm pretty sure if he really decides to dixx Reebok, Nike will more than happy to send their whole team of lawyers to help him and, more important, put down their rival.

PS. The line between god and heaven is very fuzzy in traditional Chinese belief. I do think heaven is a more appropriate word, as the word "god" is usually referred to a personified ultimate force, which is not a Confucianism concept. Conventionally speaking, 天命 is typically translated as "mandate of heaven", so I guess similar translation can be applied here.

    Nice one pryuen. Much appreciated.

And here's the whole passage of that Mencius quotation if anyone's interested:

Mencius said, "Shun rose up from the grain fields; Fu Yüeh was found as a construction laborer, Chieh Ko was pulled up from his fish and salt; Sun Shu Ao from the sea, and Pai Li Hsi from the marketplace."

Thus, when Heaven is going to give a great responsibility to someone, it first makes his mind endure suffering. It makes his sinews and bones experience toil, and his body to suffer hunger. It inflicts him with poverty and knocks down everything he tries to build.

In this way Heaven stimulates his mind, stabilizes his temper and develops his weak points. People will always err, but it is only after making mistakes that they can correct themselves. Only when you have been mentally constricted can you become creative. It will show in your face and be heard in your voice, such that you will affect others. In your own state, if you don't have legal specialists and impartial advisors, and outside your state, you don't have enemy states to harass you, your own state will certainly fall to ruin. From this we can know that life is stimulated from adversity and anxiety, and death results from relaxation and pleasure. "
