no, you are missing my point.

my point is...15 years of missing out on the biggest prize in the game SHOULD NOT BE OVERLOOKED just because you came close.

I will risk ridicule and say that I also believe Cowher may be overrated. However, if it was a choice between opening Ft. Knox to pay Cowher vs. keeping Kubiak, obviously I'd take Cowher.

But I'm just not feeling the vibe for Cowher right now. Might change my mind when it becomes more obvious Kubiak won't return.

Can someone post a link or give a rundown of NFL coaches that have long-term success at one franchise, how they do after moving elsewhere? Remember Jimmy Johnson, who springs to mind every time I think of Cowher.

He didn't miss out on the biggest prize in the game for 15 years. He won one, and got there two other times.

Name the coaches you'd take over Cowher (any, not just "available" ones). I bet we agree in large part on the list you come up with. As such, what's the point in handwringing about SB titles? Your take makes it sound like it's easy and common enough that there should be a quota. "Win one per decade, or you're complete garbage."

I'll start the list for you: Belichick (I'm butchering his name, I know), Gruden, Dungy, Payton... Who among living viable coaches (so leave out like Bum Phillips or Vince Lombardi :) ) would you take over Cowher?

I agree completely. The other thing I would add is that a Cowher type completely eliminates any question about coaching. If this team goes 8-8, we have no idea if they are being held back by coaching or if the talent is really the problem. If a Cowher-coached team goes 8-8, you can be pretty sure it's not a coaching problem.

It eliminates one more questionmark in trying to fix the team and get them on track. Another young coach could be great - but if the team continues to struggle, you still have question marks as to whether the problem is the coaching or the talent (or both).

lower the cap if needed. sign cowher.

for the first time ever, we would be a player in FA and could potentially see players take a pay cut to play for the man.

Eh. Gruden only won 1 Superbowl in 11 years. Dungy only won 1 in 13 years. Neither fits his "once a decade" criteria.

Man . . . Ask someone where they were when the Rockets won the 1st championship.
Now. . . multiply that feeling by 100

If The Texans were *IN* the superbowl
McNair would sell out Reliant [AND THE SUPER BOWL WOULD NOT EVEN BE THERE!!!]
The Tail Gating would be insane . ..

    and
If they won . . . it would be a HOUSTON HOLIDAY!
No one would be at work on Monday!!
    Maybe even Tuesday . . .

agreed entirely. it's hard to even imagine what that would be like in such a football town.

Dear Uncle Bob, if you're wondering whether other NFL owners are laughing at you behind your back, they probably are. Wanna shut em up? Hire Cowher.

Chuck might be a good one, but....

His one ring was with Dungy's team, and the rest of his time in Tampa was marked by a precipitous decline.

Sign me up for Cowher here.

I never said or implied that Cowher was garbage. Just that he isn't the football coaching God that people are making him out to be.

again, I don't know who my ideal coach's name is at this point(actually, I do....It's Todd Haley....:trollface.jpg) but if Cowher cost 10 mil per. No thanks. even though it's not my money.

If you don't want Cowher as your head coach you have too high of standards.

Dungy took Dungy's team and had a 1-4 play-off record. Winning no play-off games on the road. And playing very poorly in the last two in Philly.

Gruden took Dungy's team and won three times as many play-off games including one on the road at Philly and one at a neutral site.

WOW. Did not know Tony D was that high on the list.
Impressive considering what Tampa Bay was when he got there

    Manning padded his stats.

And Landry knows what it takes to win a super bowl. As a Chiefs fan, he has stared in the face of mediocrity for decades.

If the NFL has a salary cap, and coaches salaries don't count against it.. why does it matter how much we pay our head coach?
