Except for all those playoff appearances and winning seasons that Kubiak doesn't have...

In your opinion, are these two hypothetical coaches equal? You'd be just as happy with each?

    Coach #1:
    15 years
    1 playoff appearance
    1 Superbowl win
    14 losing seasons
    Average record: 5-11

    Coach #2:
    15 years
    12 playoff appearances
    1 Superbowl win
    0 losing seasons
    Average record: 11-5

Cowher would have won in his 4th year, if O'Donnel hadn't decided to place a huge wager against the Steelers the night before.

    LARRY SUPER BOWL MVP BROWN?!?!?

I always hate this lazy, poor argument.

The record for Super Bowl victories by a single coach...is FOUR. They aren't that easy to come by.

    Winning Percentage as HC:
    Kubiak: 36-40 (0.434)
Cowher: 149-90-1 (0.623) - that career percentage would equate to the 12th best record this year, and easily beats the Texans franchise winning percentage in a season (0.5625)

    Playoffs:
    Kubiak: 0-0
    Cowher: 12-9

    AFC Championships:
    Kubiak: 0
    Cowher: 2

Why is it that folks seem to think "well, he's overrated (not as good as Belichick)" is some sort of dumb reason to knock his prospects as a coach here? It's very simple: we need to take the next step, and he's an indisputable step above Kubiak. I don't need an automatic Super Bowl, I need improvement, and it's ridiculous to think we wouldn't more forward under him.

It's an opinion. In my opinion, you're way off with regards to this:

People have tried till blue in the face to explain to you how goofy it is to judge a HC based solely on SB rings. Compare the first 5 years of Cowher to Kubiak's. Who performed better?

Perhaps. That's much more reasonable than "he's only 1 SB ring better than Kubiak and it took him 15 years. Let's just give Kubiak 10 more years, then."

If you're going to criticize everyone else's pick, the least you could do is come up with a feasible alternative yourself.

And this is the most reasonable part of your take. If you're saying, "Cowher's great an all, but $10M??? Really??? Isn't that Parcells/Bellichick territory?" I could certainly see where you're coming from.

what is the point of the NFL again?

    Championships.

do I honestly think Kubiak is in the same class as Cowher? of course not. I'm not calling the guy a trash can, but give me a coach who comes in here and goes 10-6, 7-9, 8-8 and then 13-3(Sean Payton) and wins a chip over 10-12 years of 13-3, 12-4 and wins nothing.(Bill Cowher)...but at least his team is fired up.

    Who are you suggesting?

OF FREAKING COURSE I want some mythical super bad-ass coach that will come in here gangbusters and SB SB SB SB win all the time.

Reality is tough to live in but the Texans could do extremely worse then Cowher and if you have no alternative except some vision in your head then why even argue?

all I can do at this point is critique who is available. So if I had to choose, I would much rather have Chucky.

but again, there is still about 8 weeks left before we know exactly who the candidates are.

It would be interesting to see how the front 4 would look with Cowher.

    OLB: Brian Cushing
    MLB: Zac Diles
    MLB: Demeco Ryans
    OLB: Mario Williams
    DE: Antonio Smith
    NT: ?
    DE: ?

the concern I have had all along with Cowher is that it would be foolish to switch to a 3-4 without having a legitimate nose tackle. If they can find one, I am all for it, but they are not an easy position to find.

I've been a fan of Houston pro football since 1976. In that howevermanyyears, the two franchises combined have NEVER tipped over a Brink's truck and brought in a legitimate, big-time head coach. The biggest splash they've ever made, arguably, was Hugh Campbell. Actually, I'd argue Buddy Ryan was probably a bigger splash.

For a franchise that has been languishing in mediocrity, a guy like Bill Cowher raises the stakes and makes this an instantly viable team. He lands us a Sunday night game; he attracts players; media attention and expectations. And this poor city, a sports wasteland pretty much since October 2005, would freaking explode all over itself. I'm not even necessarily Cowher's biggest supporter, but, man oh man, would it be FUN if they brought him in.

so they should change the name to the NSBL.

you're seriously suggesting that 31 teams a year might as well not exist?

this is the point at which we fundamentally separate. A SB title is of course the goal for every team every year--but to gauge a team's performance by only that means that there are 31 failures and 1 success.

To me, this point of view is too removed from reality to have any reasonability or viability.

It would be fun, no doubt. Something football fans in Houston haven't experienced in 15+ years...

I'm with you. I don't know if he's the answer, I don't know if we have the personnel for the 3-4, I don't know if he'll take the job here, I don't know if Bob will offer him the job....but I sure would like to find out. If for nothing else, just to add some intrigue to this otherwise DULL Houston football landscape.

I think we can all agree that Landlord Landry is pretty much nonsensical. Can we just ignore him and bring Cowher to Houston please?

Mike Tomlin is probably one of the luckiest coaches in the NFL, he was hires for one of the best teams in the NFL, he found himself in the best situation, with so much talents, Franchise QB, best defense in the NFL, a team with winning mentality and winning culture and that was all created because of Cowher.

for Sean Payton, well Sean is good, and there is no way you can compare sean to Kubiak, because Payton is way better than Kubiak.
