The importance of this man and what he meant to professional basketball in Houston cannot be overstated. It's rather sad that many Rocket fans today have never heard of him. Patterson did the heavy lifting in the early days of the Rockets in Houston.

In the early years of the Rockets I remember Seeing Patterson sitting all by himself in the two thirds empty Hofheinz Pavilion. I'm sure he wondered if the NBA would ever catch on in Houston.

He did a lot of great things in his time with the team. He saw the Rockets move into the Summit. He acquired Moses Malone and saw the Rockets reach the finals. He traded Moses which began the rebuild the resulted in the twin towers and another finals appearance. He deserves a hell of a lot of credit for making the Rockets and the NBA a success in Houston.

Did the late, lamented Ray Patterson rise from the dead?

Not lamented, but no, RP remains RIP while this Thread has been bumped - - and, frankly, that was a good thing.

Someone must lament him! @tinman apparently does. This is an 8 year bump. ;-)

Never cared for him Ray or his son.

No ill will towards a dead man but he was mediocre.

Nahhh ... this is on kids not wanting to read up on History. This is why this site and Rockets Historians like yourself are pivotal...

How do they make this absurd assumption that Les was a big spender ?
So the dark ages of Pippen, Francis, and Tmac first round exits didn’t exist??

Because he did spend alot of money, just not on the Rockets. People also mistaken having multiple superstars to being a Spender. When we got Barkley in the trade some people forget that we filled the rest of the lineup with people at the local YMCA. When we got Pippen, Barkley took a huge paycut.
But again, that's why people need Rockets Historians and this site to teach.
As I've responded to you before... just because you feel the need to bash Les and rightfully so, don't talk about the new guy as if he is any better. One Douche bag just inherited the team from the Turd sandwich.

I’m willing to give Tilman a chance since he’s a Houstonian and it’s only been a few years.

He’s fixed some of the complaints of the team.
I want a good fan experience. Let’s see how next year goes.
