Let’s see if they reach an agreement... MLB doesn’t want to risk Crane testifying that he fired Luhnow at the request of the commissioners office.
Yeah, I’m thinking this suit has little chance on the merits and is being pursued to pressure Crane into a settlement.
From the link above... According to the suit… “The commissioner vetted potential penalties with Crane, and the two exchanged a series of proposals. Those negotiations proved beneficial to Crane and the Astros. “The commissioner allowed the Astros to keep their 2017 World Series championship, imposed a $5 million fine (a fraction of the revenues Crane had reaped as part of the team’s recent success), and took away four draft picks. He also issued a blanket vindication of Crane, absolving him of any responsibility for failing to supervise his club.
Ask yourself why MLB would care? This whole cheating scandal was obviously set in motion to get Luhnow run out of MLB. The other participants have already been rehired.
Luhnow waited until it became obvious no other team would consider hiring him. Now that he’s suing, it’s almost guaranteed he will never work in a major sports league again. Back to consulting some bobby-pins manufacturers on how to streamline their supply chain, guy. He was a good GM, but obviously had fatal flaws in dealing with authority and bending the rules.
And you say you don't have an agenda? Anyways, there will likely be a settlement... although you don't need 'discovery' to figure out that Crane/Manfred negotiated their way to how to try and resolve this issue. In hindsight, Manfred likely wouldn't have been able to hold any team to an ultimatum, given him being neutered on almost every other standoff since this one... but Crane refusing to pay Luhnow (while he did settle with Hinch) is the biggest sticking point.
Crane should have paid Luhnow, if not his original contract they should have worked something out to avoid this. Its pretty clear Luhnow was scapegoated for something that he was merely complicit in, not the mastermind. This is gonna get settled, MLB sure as hell doesn't want this can of worms to open up even more.
If it’s true that Luhnow wasn’t the driving force behind the scandal and wasn’t even aware of the trash can banging, then it was pretty shitty of Crane not to settle with Luhnow considering how much money Luhnow has made Crane. It must irk a Luhnow as well to see Hinch, who was as culpable as Luhnow if not more so, find work so easily.
Well, the lawsuit sealed that he won't be hired as a GM. My thought is that if teams are willing to hire Hinch and Cora, it would only be a matter of time until some team hired Luhnow. Until the lawsuit, of course.
Luhnow was the GM. Scapegoats are people low on the totem pole that get axed to save GMs regardless if the GM was the mastermind or not.
Depends on if you believe him or not What authority did he have trouble dealing with? Don't worry about Luhnow though, he will be successful in any walk of life he chooses. There's no doubt he was scapegoated though and MLB owners don't put winning first. If they did Luhnow would have a job just like the known cheaters do. This was nothing more than a successful destruction of Luhnows career by the media.
