But Jeff, don't you think that Kareem realizes he needs to change that part about him? I think, and I know I will get creamed for this, he is really serious about wanting someone to give him a chance. I think he will do whatever it takes to make that decision of hiring him not look like a bad one. However, it would be nice if Kareem had a little more experience at teaching big men than to have as his first assignment to teach Yao.
I am with Jeff on this one. If Ewing can coach, what the hell difference does it make what happened 20 years ago. Some of you guys are player first fans. I am a Rocket fan, not a Hakeem or Yao or however fan, and just want who can help this team improve. Hakeem isn't going to coach Yao, or Moses either. Get over it.
There is absolutely NO indication Kareem has changed his stance. Remember that this is the guy that, when a coach would correct him as a player, would literally walk out of practice. Kareem has received extremly low marks everywhere he has coached and now no one will take him on as an assistant because he is considered a prima donna. Ewing, on the other hand, has been praised widely for how well he has adapted to coaching. Many guys who thought he wouldn't make a good coach have found the opposite to actually be true. In fact, some insiders believe that he only needs some seasoning as a bench coach to be worthy of a head coaching job in a few years.
I will believe Ewing turned down the job only when the Chronicle or, say, Clutch reports it. ESPN boards probably had JVG coaching for the Wizards anyway, so why believe'em?
The Rockets have a big man tradition. I think signing Ewing would only add to that tradition. I'm all for it.
Amen! Who cares who Ewing played for in the past? Why does it matter? Isn't the PRESENT more important than the PAST? If we can get a good teacher (not saying Ewing is or isn't mind you) then you go after them! Whoever JVG picks as assistants is fine with me as long as they work well together and can teach this young ball club!
Who care if "Gorgeous Gorillia Whip" does not want the assistants job. He sucks anyway. He have Yao missing finger rolls in finals game like he did for years.
In the history of sports, it just isn't that wierd for players or coaches to end up with rivals. It has happened over and over in baseball. If you want a modern day example, try Roger Clements. It just should not be that big of a deal. Kareem played for the Bucks. Wilt played for the Warriors. Jordan went to the Wizards and may end up owning a portion of the Bucks. That's just how it works in sports.
