I think this deal would be pretty good for the Sonics. They free up a lot of cap space for next season. If Ewing doesn't work out then they can let him go after next season and go after Webber or Mutombo. ------------------ You ain't gotta like me, you just mad cause I tell it how it is, and you tell it how it might be. I'd much rather have Vin Baker and Ruben Patterson long term than I would Maurice Taylor and a 5-10% chance of Webber or Mutumbo. ------------------ Looking for next year's Dan Langhi? Draftsource.net Sign Mo Taylor. Bench Kenny Thomas.
Are you sure about that Cat? Baker is a time ticking bomb just waiting to blow up again. Between his depression and weight problems, he is more trouble than his an addition the team. Mo would arrive without that baggage and playing for a contract too. And Patterson really isn´t that needed now that Rashard has come into his own. They would be one of the select few teams with capspace next year. To the Knicks, it sounds great too. They get rid of Ewing and shake up a roster that has been unable to get it done in the past few seasons due to injuries. Makes a helluva lot of sense to me. Now, if we DON´T get Mo, what do you guys suggest? If we want to get something done THIS year i would suggest somehow manage to get Patterson, and maybe Jerome Williams from detroit... they are willing to part with him. The Wizard, KT and Drew may land us some of these guys. And if that can´t be done, try our best to get Webber next year. Oh, and what are your thoughts on signing Mutombo and moving Cato to PF? if we had a scoring SF it could work. just some food for thought. ------------------ "Behold the coming of the Almighty" [This message has been edited by Thanos (edited August 19, 2000).] [This message has been edited by Thanos (edited August 19, 2000).]
To the Knicks of course it makes sense. Anyone who is getting potentially an All-Star PF and a good SF with potential for an over the hill center is in GREAT shape. For Seattle, it makes zero sense. Baker has lost all of that excess weight this summer, and his play this summer resembles that of his first year in Seattle. When Baker is on, and if he loses some of that weight, he is one of the best PF's in the game. And, even though I like Mo, Vin is both a better scorer and rebounder than Mo is. Patterson isn't needed as much with Rashard, but you don't give away players like that just because you have another good player at that position. Ruben Patterson is still a very solid SF who could have excellent trade value for them and if not could bring a big time punch off the bench. You don't just throw him in because he's unneccessary. And yes, they would be one of the select few with cap space next year. But what will that get them? Pretty much nothing. The chance of them luring Webber or Mutumbo is about 5-10% at best, and there really aren't any players next year after the top 3 worth saving big time cap room for. It makes a ton of sense IMO for the Knicks, because they would absolutely be raping Seattle in this deal. However, that's why I don't see it happening. ------------------ Looking for next year's Dan Langhi? Draftsource.net Sign Mo Taylor. Bench Kenny Thomas. I don't think the chances of Mutombo or Webber going to Seattle are that small. I'm not sure but I think I read somewhere that the teams with capspace next year are the Rockets, Bulls, Pistons, Mavs, and if they make the trade, the sonics. Now out of all those teams the team closest to being championship contenders are the sonics. So Seattle would have a pretty good chance at getting Mutombo or Webber. ------------------ You ain't gotta like me, you just mad cause I tell it how it is, and you tell it how it might be.
seattle is in "win now" mode with payton not getting any younger. baker is a 4, not a 5. i think seattle becomes a contender with ewing, and lottery bait without him. that's a big upside for a franchise used to contending. i'd offer sacramento kelvin cato and 2 of the rockets 4 stockpiled first-round draft picks for webber. he and hakeem get along great, and i'd let the "love fest" begin for him to sign a big deal here with some of hakeem's cap space next year. ------------------
New Jack: I've yet to hear anyone make these salary numbers work in a realistic fashion. Yes, the Seattle Times does offer a scenario, but they'd be sacrificing *alot* of depth for Ewing. Not worth it by any means. ------------------ The lottery sucks. Playoffs 2001. [This message has been edited by haven (edited August 20, 2000).]
Isn't Ewing's contract already up? I could've sworn there was a big debate going in New York about whether to give Ewing an extension or not. I guess that was for after next year, maybe, though. IMO, the Knicks would NEVER trade Ewing, unless it was to a team on the cusp of a championship, like Portland or Miami. Seattle doesn't make the cut. This will never happen. ------------------ "All these white guys running onstage making believe they're in gangs...Gangs would chew 'em up and spit them out. If Seattle improves so much from this deal as some of you say, why was the basic response "Hell no" from the Sonics? If they traded Baker for Ewing and then sign Taylor, they might make it to the 2nd round of the playoffs at best. If they trade Baker for Ewing and then no Taylor, they are out of the playoffs entirely IMO. No matter how you look at it, I can't see Ewing making the Sonics a championship contender. No way. http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/sports/sonics/html98/soni20_20000820.html ------------------ Looking for next year's Dan Langhi? Draftsource.net Sign Mo Taylor. Bench Kenny Thomas. Ewing on Miami seems a natural fit. If not this year then next. ------------------ humble, but hungry.
I don't think their fans understand that to become legitimate title contenders the sonics need to make some roster changes. I really don't see them being title contenders if they stand pat with the current roster they have. Sure, trading Baker for Ewing is risky and it might not work out but if I were the sonics that's a risk I would be willing to take. It's not like their trading for an overpaid player with many years remaining on his contract it's only for 1 year. Plus if they make this trade they get Taylor so really the trade would be Baker for Ewing AND Taylor. ------------------ You ain't gotta like me, you just mad cause I tell it how it is, and you tell it how it might be.
The way I see it...Ewing is old and breaking down the past three years. Why is he so desired, other than his contract expiration. He shows flashes like Hakeem. But, enough flash to agree to a trade and really add impact? ------------------ "Their Tiger Kung Fu is strong, but our Dragon will defeat them!"
Okay, looks like I could be looking a little stupid soon. Apparently, Ewing has told the Knicks that there are 8 teams that he would agree to be traded to. The Wizards are even on the list! I thought all Ewing wanted was a ring? I think he thinks he's still good. ------------------ "All these white guys running onstage making believe they're in gangs...Gangs would chew 'em up and spit them out.
