'Star Trek': What people are saying after the surprise screening

    Categories: Star Trek

Fullcastincharacter_l Last night, some very lucky Star Trek fans who believed they were walking into a screening of 1982's Wrath of Khan instead got a surprise sneak peek at J.J. Abrams' new enterprise. While Abrams' reboot/prequel, Star Trek, isn't scheduled to officially hit theaters until May 8, those fortunate enough to be on hand at the Alamo Draft House in Austin, Tex., were the giddy victims of a blockbuster bait and switch. And nudging the event into total nerdvana territory, the hotly anticipated summer tentpole was reportedly introduced by the film's writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, its producer Damon Lindelhof (Lost), and (get this) Spock himself, Leonard Nimoy.

Needless to say, those in attendance -- no doubt very familiar with making their sci-fi opinions known in cyberspace -- immediately posted early reviews of the film on the Internet. And so far, the reactions range from wildly ecstatic to only barely less ecstatic. On his AICN site, Austin's blogging poobah Harry Knowles dedicated about 40,000 words to the screening, reporting that it concluded with a standing ovation that lasted five to six minutes. "After the film, the audience was a collective smile, some crying they were so happy," Knowles wrote.

Meanwhile, in another huge, scrawling review, a writer at filmschoolrejects.com summed up the pic by saying, "This version is new and fresh, but it doesn’t forget its roots -- and I think fans will appreciate that." Cinema Blend was similarly positive: "The new Star Trek movie is amazing -- easily the best Trek movie since The Wrath of Khan, and a veritable feast of sight and sound."

Elsewhere online, OMG twitter posts were blasted from inside the darkened theater before the end credits even rolled. Here' a sampling from slashfilm.com:

-"I just got back from Star Trek and it was AMAZING. The best Star Trek movie ever. Yes, it even best Wrath of Khan. Believe me."

-"ZOMG!! Just saw the new Star Trek movie and it melted my pants!!!!!"

-"My mind = blown Star Trek was AWESOME!"

-"Yes, I'm the guy who's never seen an episode of ST and got to see Star Trek tonight. As a total ST virgin, the movie is incredible."

One blogger on Knowles' site who was at the Alamo added: "You don't replace Wrath of Khan. You just don't. Not unless the movie you're replacing it with is pretty godd---- strong. And guess what? It is. Holy Christ Crispies in a bucket of milk, was this movie f---ing awesome."

If you were lucky enough to be at the Alamo last night, let us know what you thought.

Heard about that screening but I know better than trust those early review, eps. considering most were die hard fans. I think it'll be good but just not as good as this intital reaction.

Yes, you should have no problem following it because it's a reboot of the original series and movies. But it's not just a reboot in the sense of it's a movie that takes these characters and re imagines them, it's a reboot that actually happens in the universe that Star Trek inhabits.

They actually pulled that stunt in several other cities however Austin was the only viewing where people actually showed up to watch Wrath of Khan.

Yeah its pretty painful, The Voyage Home is full of 80's goofyness but still watchable.

    Good marketing ploy.

I don't know. Die-hards might be unduly critical if they perceived it to be unfaithful to the original vision. On the flip-side, if it is faithful but has different faults, those might be ignored. Trekkies have already demonstrated a tolerance for bad acting, bad costuming, and tired plot devices.

I want to see this movie, and I'm not a Star Trek fan at all.

Also this thread gives me a great excuse to post the following:

    Rocket
    I'm taking a rocket.
    I'm packing my suitcase
    Hey, look out, Moon!

    Yeah, a rocket
    into outer space.
    Goodbye, human race
    I'll be there soon.

    Blast off!
    For fun and adventure.
    There's a fair adventure
    collecting stones.

    Yeah, it's my way
    on the ol' space highway.
    That's why they all say
    "There goes Astronaut Jones!"

    Hey!"

Announcer: "Astronaut Jones". Tonight's episode: Episode 16, The Creature From Porpula.

Astronaut Jones: [ into walkie-talkie ] Hello, Earth? I think I hear someone coming. I'm going to make contact. Over and out, Earth. Bye.

Female Alien: Earthling, my name is Krugella..

    Astronaut Jones: Uh-huh.

Female Alien: I'm the Queen of Perillians..

    Astronaut Jones: Right.

Female Alien: A proud and peace-loving race..

    Astronaut Jones: Right.

Female Alien: My people have been awaiting your arrival for some time now.

    Astronaut Jones: Stay word.

Female Alien: We're in desperate need of your help.

    Astronaut Jones: Dig it.

Female Alien: The Galaxians have seized our cities and plundered our riches.

    Astronaut Jones: What?

Female Alien: They will stop at nothing until our whole cizilization is..

    Astronaut Jones: Mmm-hmm.

Female Alien: ..blotted from the universe.

    Astronaut Jones: Say what.

Female Alien: You're our only hope.

    Astronaut Jones: Right.

Female Alien: You must help us..

    Astronaut Jones: Dig.

Female Alien: ..or we will surely perish.

    Astronaut Jones: Mmm-hmm.

Female Alien: What do you say?

    Astronaut Jones: Right.

Female Alien: What do you say to that, Great One?

Astronaut Jones: Well, why don't you drop out of that green jumpsuit and show me that phat ass!

    Jingle:
    "Rocket
    I'm taking a rocket.
    I'm packing my suitcase
    Hey, look out, Moon!"

Announcer: "Astronaut Jones", written by Tracy Morgan. Directed by Tracy Morgan. Hair and Make-up by Tracy Morgan. Produced by Tracy Morgan and Melvin Goldfarb. This has been a Morgan/Goldfarb Production.

    Voice: You like?

Astronaut Jones V/O: You're look' up, money!
