it's statisically the same. the 83% number is because the sample size is small (6) so it means that 5 in 6 were successful.

i'd think surgery heals it faster - the risks with surgery are things like infection and effects of anthesia.

I thought the doctor said that some tarso-navicular stress fractures have a risk of another non-union injury. I might have misheard him. There obviously will be wear and tear on the foot after he starts playing again.A risk of another injury can't be discounted. I just can't get that out of my head. :(

But is it displaced, or is it just a small micro fracture?

I understand that he has to play for the Olympics, that's a.....big gig. But Olympics only come once per 4 years right? And yet Yao plays for CNT every summer.... for things like..... national cup????

Honestly, I don't want him back should we make the playoffs. If we make the playoffs it means the healthy guys have formed Post-Yao chemistry that would be ruined by trying to force him back into the lineup.

We all know due Yao's size when he returns from injuries it takes him quite a while to return to form. The last thing we need deep in the playoffs is low stamina, concrete shoes Yao.

See you next season, Yao. Get well.

My big fear is that this injury is caused by Yao's physique -- that he's just so tall and has bulked up so much that it puts too much pressure on his feet. I'm not a doctor, though, and I'm almost two feet shorter than Yao, so I won't pretend like I know what I'm talking about.

As a resident gloom-monger around here: Let's forget Yao for this season. He's done. Let's talk about whether he can still have a strong pro career AFTER this season. What, if anything, can be done to keep this injury from recurring regularly in a pro basketball player? Let's figure out whether we're talking about losing a year or losing a career.

The idea of surgery scares me. Everytime you do surgery there is scar tissue.

I would hope the organization takes a good hard look at footwear...and gets him some real QUALITY shoes that protect him.

Call Kramer, I think his "Jimmy" shoes are available.

when the Olympics is around the corner, I dont think the big fella will risk it. I predict he will not play this season, playoff or not. He will play in the Olympics.

I'm tempted to try to move him. I love the guy, but he's just to big. These injuries are not going to stop. They're only going to get worse. It may be best to move him early on while he still has value.

they said they caught it early, so i can't see how it could be displaced.

Then he should avoid surgery at all costs...In my (not so medical) opinion.

I just don't buy that he's out for the season if they caught it "early".

They say that the average recovery time for this is 3-4 months, but that is when it's been progressing for 4 months undetected.

If they caught it early, then shouldn't the recover time be shortened? And if not, if he rests for two months, doesn't that buy him a window to play in some amount of pain for the playoffs? Isn't this something that can't be managed and monitored?

My feeling is that the organization is taking the most conservative approach, and saying he's out but crossing their fingers he might heal quickly and return for the playoffs.

And I do think we can still make it to the playoffs ala the Chris Webber Kings.

It's a matter of opinion as some doc's recommend surgery even in this case to accelerate a return to peak atheltic performance quicker. There's no real guarantee that even after 4-5 months this thing heals completely.

Imagine the reaction and PR disaster if they said "It's on us"

There's no guarantee of recovery either way though. Actually the only guarantee is that the doc will pocket more cash if surgery is indeed performed...

Did you notice Yao rocking hands on knee before most of his FTs this season? I am sure somebody somewhere already brought this up. I don't think he did that in past seasons. I assume it had to do with last season's knee injury.

Ok, after watching the press conference, I think he should go ahead and get the surgery.

The doctor basically said the bone would be stronger with the surgery than without...and that is better for the future.
