okay its three games into the pre-season, and ive seen enough of reece gaines to know hes not a good player. no wonder he didnt get playing time on the majic's roster. we should have asked for keith bogans instead.

i find it hard to believe that anyone can make a judgement on a player who has only played 32 mins in the preseason

He played 364 mins last year in 38 games and sucked pretty hard then from what I've heard. I know a lot of people are hoping he's some diamond in the rough, but the reality is that the dude isn't that good and he was mostly given to us to match cap space in the trade. If Gaines is cut, oh well, it's not like we're losing some integral piece of the Rocket's puzzle.

The same can be said about Hawkins.

Fact is, it doesn't really matter if we cut both of them, since neither have any chance of cracking the regular rotation.

I personally think Gaines has a better shot at becoming a decent NBA player. He also has a guarunteed contract.

He isn't going to get cut. He's got 2 years left on his deal. Unless we're bringing in difference makers at the 14th and 15th roster spots, then Gaines will at least stick around on the bench.

2 years? Oh man, this is sounding worse and worse...at least it's not a big contract.

Reece Gaines has made one of the worst debuts I've seen in a long time. He looks absolutely worthless. No court vision, no ability to score. Complete crap.

I was enthused about Gaines after first seeing reports about him doing a couple of nice things in the first preseason game, but WOW, I've never seen a player look so clueless as he did at the end of the Beijing game. He just did some stupid fancy dribbling (I know I sound like a 55 year old white man) at the top of the key and then...well, I don't even know how to describe what he did. It was bad, though.

Hawkins will and should make the team. He is a nice player that if give the chance to get a jumpshot will become a good player. I question how much upside he has though. I beleive Gaines is a good player that will take a year or two to develop.

That doesn't mean that every player out of Temple is going to be a winner.

Sorry, SM, prejudice works both ways. I take that to mean every Temple player is a winner.

What prejudice of mine? And how does any prejudice of mine lead you to think that every player out of Temple is a winner. Very, very

I know the definition of prejudice, I am just wondering what prejudice you think it is that I hold, which would color my judgement of Hawkins. For some reason you seem to want to beat around the bush. Why don't you just come out and say what you mean. That way, I can respond with my thoughts, instead of playing this stupid guessing game.

Sure, I'll tell you. Your basketball analysis is superficial and tainted by your steadfast belief in certain stereotypes, hence your judgment in this instance are not based on the facts, rather they are based on your preconceived notions.

Or maybe you just like "fundamentals"....

    Thank you.

I think it would be impossible to tell how well a player that has been seen for 10 minutes will contribute to a team. The best I can manage to do with that sample is to compare what I see of his game to others who have played in the league for a longer period of time. I don't think I am alone in doing this. On NBAdraft dot net they draw comparisons to current NBA players for all of the projected picks.

I disagree that my analysis is superficial, given the limited sample size (and viewing it only once, and in real time) it would be difficult to provide something more in depth. If anything, I feel that I have provided more in depth analysis than those who have said "he has no shot, but he gets to the basket - A+" or some derivative of same.

Our opinions differ on what skills are most important for a basketball player, and that is fine. It will be hard to prove that either is more correct.
