MadMax: Second hand smoke might irritate you, but it will have no more prolonged effect on you than having a dessert after dinner. The fact that you had to go to a japanese story is sufficient evidence that it is a load of horse puckey. You do know that nutmeg will kill you, and yet I place a little on my eggnog every christmas. Hell, water poisonous if ingested enough. Get over it!
Dallas is a different place with their own laws Let me clarify - he's a seargent in the Harris County Sherrif's Department. That encompasses Houston. There's no such thing as a passing lane anywhere in Harris County unless specifically marked by a sign - including Houston. -- droxford
a japanese story?? fatty, that's classic!!! it was pulled right off WebMD...it was just one of many stories that came up when i searched second hand smoke. tell ya what...i trust those crazy japanese doctors on this more than i trust you. sorry!!
I'm sorry for getting my blood pressure up. I need a vacation. I'm leaving for Disneyland in two weeks and I need to relax a little. And threads like this pour gasoline on my fires, ya know? serenity now.... serenity now.... -- droxford
sole reason producing cause there is a difference. seriously, fatty...are you actually denying every study that's been done on this?
Pretty much. I'm not saying that smoking is good for you, and I understand that it increases certain diseases if inhaled enough, but the second hand crap is BS. My entire family smokes or smoked. No problems whatsoever here.
I know. I'm saying that I can ask a Dallas cop about Dallas laws, and he's not always going to know the right answer. We've seen it here multiple times (not only with the 'failure to ID' stuff but even with issuing citations in other areas that turned out to not be against the law).
In trying to prove that there is no such law, this is the best I can do, and IMHO I think it's pretty satisfactory. Perhaps you, or someone else, could show me the law that states that it is only to be used for passing? -- droxford
I don' think there's such a law, either, but saying that you know someone and asked him is no more proof than just my saying I don't think there's such a law. I refuse to accept that a Harris County Sheriff's Department employee would be any more familiar with the laws of the city of Houston than anyone else. My doctor says there's no such law, either, and he's just as qualified to say.
You know what.....here's an article (and there's a bunch more) that claim there is such a law: http://texnews.com/1998/texas/left0704.html Still, I'm not so certain these AP writers misinterpreted the law.....I'm still researching.
1. hecklers. 2. people who don't watch TV and think that somehow it makes them special. 3. people who are NEVER wrong. 4. conservative talk-show hosts. 5. people on my ignore list.
By the by, you can actually read the City of Houston municipal code. I would assume if there were any such law specific to the city of Houston, it would be in there. As far as I know, there's nothing in there about passing lanes. The only thing about lanes in there were "restricted access lanes" which, I assume, is referencing HOV lanes or special bus lanes and the like.
actually...according to the article pole posted...it is a state law. but i think there's a municipal law that says trucks can't drive in the left hand lane of freeways in city limits unless they're passing.
Yeah, but I didn't get to read your article until after I had posted. But the contention was that there was no Houston law that said the left lane was for passing only because a Harris County Sheriff's sergeant said so. So, I was merely looking at what Houston's code did or did not say due to that contention, which is why I noted the "if there was any law specific to the city of Houston" part.
Man, City of Houston employees I won't call these folks idiots but I will call them hmmmmm lazy or abusing the system. I have been trying to get some permits to build a business in midtown Houston but they just keep sitting on the plans. It has been nearly 2 months. I can just imagine what it will take to get the inspectors to approve my occupancy. The problem is.. You really can't do anything about it! I almost feel like I am in a third world country.
i feel your pain, bigboy. i have some construction contractor clients who express these concerns to me all the time. not much can be done about it.
I worked in a bar for 5 years, 5 years ago, and I fell the effects of second hand smoke to this day. We used to open up the projection screen TV's and wipe thick black tar off of the internal mirrors. Last time I cracked open an anatomy book the internal structure of a human lung was more porous than a sheet of glass. You wanna smoke, fine, kill yourself. To say that the smoke that comes of the unfiltered end of a cigarette that contains 100's of airborne carcinogens is not gonna hurt someone is dumb. Let me know how you feel when your whole family of smokers develops lung cancer or emphysema.
