Does this mean that Kerry's commanding officers were lying when they gave him outstanding and excellent performance evaluations?

Good for them. I hope their petition gets all the attention and scrutiny they hope it does. We should know everything about every candidate who runs for President.

Maybe Kerry isn't a war hero. Maybe he did serve in the military as a political calculation. This doesn't really change things in the election, though: one candidate sacked up and served, and the other hid in the bottom of a spoon.

b-bob.. those are good questions. If what they say now is different than what they said in the past, I think we should have an explanation of why they changed their minds. Also I don't know enough about the situation so I will not question his medals.. they were there though so I'd be interested in hearing their reasons for their questions of his medals and also why they gave it to him then if they didn't think he should get them.

I was just reponding to him saying the thing about how commanding officers are good to hear from regarding kerry.. because these are commanding officers. Especially if we are going to consider clarks opinions of him who is now endoring him..

Like I said, I wasn't there. His commanding officers were. I don't know what they originally said about him, but if it was different we should know why they changed it. I agree with that. Especially since many of the Bush supporters (yes I am one myself) accuse Kerry of flip flopping

Tangential to the subject but what is the obsession about Kerry's middle name Forbes?

The only other Forbes I know in politics is Steve Forbes and he's a conservative.

Some of y'all sound like his mother.

"John Forbes Kerry! Get off of that couch and clean your room!"

    1. I disagree. I trust their written comments when their memories were fresh from the conflict. Why did they systematically lie when their memories were more fresh but now suddenly have more clear memories three decades later during a highly-charged campaign?
    2. A quotation from a partisan claiming to be non-partisan is everyday fare. Show me their voting records. This guy's statement is as meaningful as you claiming to be non-partisan.
    3. Already covered. What he did with that medal is his business. It is not appropriate for another citizen to question the exact extent of Kerry's awarded service and noted injuries. No citizen of decency should stand for this questioning of Kerry's injuries. Do we care about the exact dimensions of the pieces of shrapnel that he carries in his body? Reprehensible political rhetoric... Truly the lowest common denominator that can be reached by any political movement, brought to us by the Cheney/Rove/Bush attack & smear modus operandi.

samfisher.. I don't know.. this article seems to be more about the quality of fit for leadership and not so much actual military stuff. even if he was good at the military aspects I suppose t hey could have different opinion on the ability to lead.

I know another article mentioned a officer questioning the serverity of his wound etc. I would like to know why it was given if they question it now. It seems like they should have done something about it then but that person said he did question it then.. I don't know if there is a record of him doing that or not..

also I've never heard of this news source before. is this being reported by anyone else?

In his evaluations during Viet Nam, his commanding officers all wrote that he was highly effective as a leader, and that he made excellent decisions under pressure, etc.

They feel differently now in regards to him being commander-in-chief. Let's talk about flip-flops.

franchise.. if that is the case.. I would like an explanation from them. Like I said, I like to require the same from each side. If we are going to say kerry flip flops then the responsible thing is to question these comments until I hear some kind of explanation.. if these same guys liked his leadership before

the fact that he left vietnam could be part of the reason. when they wrote those comments he hadnt left.. but I dont know

Except how many people that you know are the same as "leaders" at 20 yrs old and 50+? If you're trying to find someone's fitness to lead, why would you talk to people who haven't known the guy for 30 years?

Looking back at the things I post. I really am no help to the Bush side at all, but I try to be fair about it and not take every kerry criticism as true, and every bush praise as correct

They say something about his past and his experiences, but certainly not about who he is now. Where the medals are relevant is simply as a reminder that he did serve in Vietnam and that he does have experiences of being "on the front lines" that Bush and most of his senior advisors do not have - but there, it's the experience that counts, not the medals. I don't think the medals themselves are particularly important in evaluating his fitness as President.

Well, that position would at least be fair, since we're not supposed to care about:
    1. Why Bush was dicharged from his service.
    2. Where he was in the unaccounted for service time.
    3. That he had a significant alcohol problem in his early years.
    4. That he ran an oil company into the ground in his attempts at running a non-baseball business.

Seriously, I'm up for judging these guys on who they are *now* and what they've stood for *lately*.

The point of all of this is the idea of leadership. The President of the United States should be a great leader -- this we can all agree on. What on earth has Forbes Kerry done to make us think that he can be a good leader? The only thing he's ever lead is the Vietnam Vets against the War klan, something that he doesn't dare trot out in front of voters today. There can be no denying Bush's leadership, both as Commander-in-Chief as well as his time as Governor. I believe it is this strong leadership advantage that has Bush well ahead in the electoral vote polls these days...

Yes, Kerry has broken every fundraising record in the last quarter and took Bush's opening punch, and by every indication is ahead or tied with a war time president and hasnt even made
his first big ad buy until today.

    very worried over here...

I agree. I am unsure if JFK is a "great" leader, and that would be my ideal. I suspect he's more of a standard politician with an impressive military record.

But both of those qualifications put him miles above Bush, and at this point I'd rather go for the guy who doesn't really say anything of note over the guy who is incompetent, dishonest, dangerous, jingoistic, and think's it all ok because he's on a mission from God.

Leading us strongly into record defecits, high unemployment, and quagmires in foreign countries is not an advantage.

By the way, you have no idea what youre talking about on "electoral vote polls". All polls indicate a tight race, with Kerry leading in some , and Bush leading in others.
