His glove's been getting it done, but his throwing arm has been inconsistent. And his bat has been non-existent. These "defensive" shortstops are a dime-a-dozen. I agree. Everett needs to GO!
The whole team is hitting under .200 WRISP. You gonna send them all packing? Unless the replacement is an upgrade on *both* sides of the field or his name is Miguel Tejada, you do *not* give up that hot glove and wide range for an extra 20 freaking base hits in a regular season.
If there was one person to shoulder the blame for last night's loss it was Morgan Ensberg, not Adam Everett. Either way you need to blame the team as a whole for sucking it up and leaving 15 men on.
Well, sure. After all this crew is ONLY 2nd best in the whole baseball world (of North A nerica, at least).
I would rather take Julio Lug offense/Defense than Everett ANY DAY!! Just to see the bottom of the order comes up Asumus/Everett/Pitcher and knowing is a 1 2 3 inning.
i agree, burke should be given a shot at shortstop he was good in the minors at SS and 2B. everett is very good defensively but he does make mistakes on routine plays a little too much. but to come up with a ton of different stats to prove how everett is saving us runs doesn't make up the stat that he hasn't come up with a single hit in 14 at bats with RISP. he is MONEY at the least clutch hitter i've ever seen. he just doesn't get it done. i think we need to try burke or get someone else who can field just as well and get some damn hits.
I really like Everett and I think his defense is worth it. That said I would like to see the Stros bring in another shortstop next season that can hit. That way we can have some late inning defense and offense and if the other guy takes Adam's job then so be it. It would be stupid to get rid of Adam alltogether.
Everett needs to learn how to throw shutout baseball in the World Series or man he has just gotta go.
Yeah, Astros fans couldn't wait to get Julio outta here. He certainly did a nice job for the D-Rays this year.
Well, Larussa could care less about Eckstein being a premier defensive SS, because the Cards have a strong offensive team to help offset that. We don't.
Eckstein is part of that offense..... Look, I am not saying put a player who is crappy out there but I would bet that you would win more often with a decent offensive player, than defensive. Say Adam saves 2 or 3 games a year with his glove for the team, a better bat may win 10 or more.....just need the upgrade. DD
Well that one homer he hits for us will be offset by the 10+ games we win with a decent hitting shortstop. DD
Sign Furcal and trade Everett and Burke plus a couple prospects for Torri Hunter. Resign Roger for 1 more year. Give Roy his dough. Find a 5th starter somewhere, maybe a left handed knuckleballer. Anything has to be better than what we got. Bache looks set for a breakout season next year. Roy and Andy are money. Let Roger take off the whole months of April and May. Don't let him start ballgames until June, so he isn't worn out and popping hammies in October. Let Wandy work long relief out of the pen and spot start in April and May for Roger. Trade Euzekiel to the Mexican league for a dozen tamales and a sombrero. Burn the sombrero and let the tamales sit in a plastic bag on the roof of Minute Maid until September. Then add some ground up Acme Brick to the tamales and place them in the tracks of the roof and burn up the motor in the roof while it is in the closed position and force the thing to jump the track. Call in the engineers and have them find it unstable in the open position because of all the hot air blowing out Selig's piehole. Renegotiate Bags contract and pay him a $400,000 a year annuity for the rest of his life while tearing up the last year of his deal. Make sure Selig is arrested for indecent exposure every time he steps foot off a plane at IAH. As he sits in jail, feed him part of the gravely, fermented tamales so he gets a good heartburn. Get Bags a Jack in the Box Halloween mask so he is actually seen smiling. When the playoffs start, smash his hands in the locker and break them so he can't pinch hit. Shorten the spaces on Garner's lineup card about 5 lines and only let him use one golf pencil that is replaced once a week and cannot be sharpened. Run the Larry Dierker brain scan on Phil in late September to make sure the veins in his brain haven't gotten all balled up and are impairing his thought process. Take all the Red Bull out of Brad Lidge's locker at the end of September so he won't overthrow all his playoff appearances and lose the movement and placement of his pitches. Make him smoke an ounce of Mary Jane approximately 12 hours before gametime just to take the edge off. Sign David Eckstein's midget brother for a pinch hitter off the bench and bring him in for every bases loaded situation. That way we get 2 runs, one from the walk, and one from the suicide squeeze. For those of you saying that Burke can not play SS, I hope you are consistent and say that Biggio should not be playing 2B..... Biggio is a prime example of an average defensive player (at this stage in his career) being a VERY effective player on defense and offense. Burke could probably do the same at SS for us. DD
1.) Do you think Burke will hit like Biggio? I don't. 2.) Shortstop is a more difficult position than second base. 3.) Can we just reread this: Please explain what the latter number has to do with the former assertion.
I contend that a stellar defensive player who is a terrible hitter is not as valuable as an average defensive player who is a decent hitter. I think if you can make 95% of the plays, but still hit for more power and a higer average, then you will win more games with the average SS then the defensive one. DD
So you admit that Everett's defense is stellar, not "overrated"? What makes you think that Burke will hit considerably better than Everett? Bear in mind that Everett has hit homers and had hot streaks in the past, too.
I would agree that a stellar defensive player who is a terrible hitter is not as valuable as an above average defensive player who is a decent hitter. You're talking 30 hits difference over the year, and that's not enough hits for me to give up all those baserunners for the other team by having an average defender up there. The problem is, Burke is average at best at SS--average at best. (Admittedly I say this from the reports of others and not having seen him play myself.)
