We could break this down like the Zapruder tape.

Buck, I did not catch it on the fly. The ball was headed straight for me when it got deflected by a guy's hands in front of me. Then, it ended up being on the floor of the row right behind me and I snatched it up. I beat two other pairs of hands.

No doubt I got s*** for not throwing it back.

I didnt throw it back for the a variety reasons.

It's the first ball I've ever gotten at a game and I've been to around 50 games in my life.

Secondly, I was the only member of my family of 4 not to catch ball from the stands.

--In 1987, my mother litterally caught a foul ball against the Expos on the 3rd base side and I think Tim Wallach was batting.

--in the opening day of 1994, my father literally one-handedly caught a HR off the bat of Sean Berry of the Expos. The HR occured in the 2nd or 3rd inning and landed in the mezzanine.

--in 2000, my brother grabbed a foul ball that bounced off the railing between the two decks at minute maid park on the first base side against the Dodgers. Mark Grudzelanik was the batter.

everyone else still has their ball. so I wanted to keep mine. I completed the family set. :)

On a side note, my hand was about 3 inches away from Adam everett's HR. directly over my head. I should have had 2 homerun balls had I been thinking and used my hat.

I've been so close to about 3-4 HRs in my life, as well as dozens of foul balls. I have nothing to show as of today though. :(

    Nice "catch" JBII. ;)

    I'd have kept it.

Bah, the only reason I can think of to throw it back is the get a mild applause from all the people sitting around me. To hell with them. I'm not there to impress the other Astros fans. If I catch a homerun ball, regardless of who hit it (unless it was Jim Leyritz, in which case I would calmly lace it with cyanide and feed it to him a piece at a time...ditto Jim Edmonds), I keep it. It may only be worth $1.00 on Ebay, or whatever value you get from putting it on a display case and looking at it for the rest of your life, but to me it's worth more than whatever value you get from throwing it back on the field and copying 80% of the other fans in MLB that catch a homerun ball by the other team.

If the little kid that caught the baseball earlier in the game can throw it back, so can you. We dont want your stinking ball.

i disagree...i get much more value in getting the crowd cheering and the fun of it than holding on to a stupid baseball...of which i have many at home.

Actually, now that I think about it, I'd be more likely to keep it if I actually CAUGHT the ball. If I picked it up off the ground I'd probably still keep it...but no freaking way I throw it back if I caught it. Double if it's a barehanded catch. *watches hand swell up*

It's not that easy, but only because you are in the stands. Your natural instinct will be to let up because of the incline of the stands. If you throw it as hard as you can from the aisle, you'll go tumbling downward, and it will be on tape for all the world to see. If you throw it from your seat, you won't have enough leg action to get it very far.

I know I can reach the infield, but only if I throw from a flat surface.

How about the throwback from on top of the green monster. That throw could be one to remember.

Or perhaps a throwback while wearing a throwback rainbow colors jersey?

    Dude...you've got issues. :)

Why in the world would I want to glom onto a weak tradition perpetuated by Cubs fans (and subsequently by trailer parks everywhere when the only baseball they could get was on WGN)?

    This debate is really silly.

If, by some wierd cosmic twist of fate, I find myself blessed with seats atop the green monster, and further I am graced by the baseball gods to allow me to catch a home run ball while atop the green monster....I can guaran-damn-tee you that ball is NOT being thrown back on the field.:D

I don't think you can get enough room to throw it that far. You might fall over or something. Just based on when i play baseball either you need a hop step or some kind of start to throw that far. If you do it from a stand still more power to you.
