You kidding me? Hyenas would tear **** up in Houston. Coyotes would eat pets, but they are scared of humans unless they are really small kids. Actually I think even a medium sized dog could scare away a coyote. I lived in southern california and I had a medium sized dog, and I was a pretty small kid myself, and coyotes would always come into the backyard when I was out there playing. I would just yell at them and they'd run away.
I see them all the time in Clear Lake and I've almost hit a couple on the way home from work when they run out onto Space Center Blvd. The unfortunate new construction is pushing out all kinds of wildlife onto the roads.
Yeah, I saw a few of them in the Arboretum. There were news reports a couple of years ago about pets in the area getting chomped on. They're not solely nocturnal, btw. The adults do a good bit of their hunting during the day.
