I think the chances of more than 1-2 becoming All-Stars, DPOY or 6MOY-caliber athletes is pretty slim. That's the case with any NBA player, really. More than likely, there's 1-2 future top 20-30 caliber guys in the bunch, a couple other average to above average starters on a contender, a couple of rotational-caliber guys and a bunch of guys who may never get more minutes or develop beyond where they are right now. Gun to my head, I think Sengun is the future franchise piece, and I feel damn good about Martin and Tate as at least average starters to really solid rotational players on a contending team. The rest are a total crapshoot, with Green being the only guy I can confidently say I see with All-Star-or-greater potential. I see a lot of guys on the roster who could carve out specific roles on teams, like Brooks and Mathews as 3-point specialists. But a lot of the guys with potential have significant holes in their games. Nothing wrong with optimism, though. I hope I'm wrong and there's 3-4 All-Stars in this group who can grow into a contender in a few years without too many additions. But more than likely, I feel like half of this roster will be significantly different 3-4 years down the line and we'll look back on a lot of these guys as fun young players who never quite reached their potential.
That is EXACTLY how I feel, play the kids, and play to win. Exactly, how many of them will keep working non-stop to get better once they get used to the wealth and privilege that comes with being an NBA player? How many will worry more about their instagram image and their brand than their game - that is what stops many from reaching their peak - and that is the key. DD
I agree with you, my OP stated as much. Very few players actually meet their potential in any sport. As per the post you just replied to I think Green, Sengun and Tate are most likely to hit their ceiling, which I perceive to be 2 all-stars and a solid starter (Tate) with Tate being a pretty much dead-cert. The rest I dunno, I think a few of our guys do have the raw talent to become all-star or borderline level if they did meet all of their potential, but the odds are against them and that happening. If I was to pick a sleeper, I could definitely see Brooks becoming another Lou Williams off the bench bucket machine.
Pretty optimistic take. Except for Sengun. Only 50/50 while Green is 60/40??? Sengun already showing that he makes difference in Win column. His potential is already being realized.
Why are you not sure about Sengun and his potential for body transformation? Nothing about his body type says the won't be able to do it. Usually its the skinny Christian Wood types that are the cause for concern. Sengun should be ok as long as he tries and nothing suggest he wont.
You need to look at it in context of where I put their ceilings. I think Sengun has a higher ceiling in that if he had a bigtime body transformation and his athleticism took a jump he has top 5 potential, I don't think Green has that. With that in mind I think its easier for Green to hit his lower ceiling than it is for Sengun to hit his absolute peak. On the flipside I think Green's floor is lower as a regular starter (which is the 40%) whereas I'd hang my hat on Sengun's floor being an All star.
I think Sengun is our Center and Green our Shooting Guard who are All Stars and Franchise Players. We need a elite wing player who can clamp down on defense and 3 point shooter.
Ceilings: Sengun = Dave Cowens Tate = Bobby Jones Green = Dražen Petrović Christopher = Joe Dumars Garuba = Shane Battier Matthews = Jamal Crawford KMJ = Gerald Wallace KPJ = Steve Smith These comparisons are probably crap, but the point is: If more than two of these guys come close to their ceiling (whatever that might be), we've got a contender. If four or more do it, we likely have a champion (assuming the coaching is solid).
This ceiling thing is just beating about the bush. I just chuckled at the thought, if you say to a girl. Hey girl, you are a 8 or 9 if you do a body transformation......I think I get a slap.
Oh look, the person who only posts to bash Sengun and nothing else doesn't think he has a high ceiling. I'm so surprised my face nearly fell off /sarcasm.
CEILINGS: Sengun = Sabonis Jr Tate = PJ Tucker (younger Horn Big12 PoY version) Green = bigger Iverson Christopher = poor man's Jrue Garuba = Jae Crowder KMJ = Derrick Jones KPJ = Tyreke Evans
Think Christopher is the PG of the future with Sengun being primary playmaker and Green scoring from the wing. Think Tate will be able to run with that group and Armoni, KJ and Matthew’s can be solid bench and rotation pieces. KPJ projects well as a sixth man for me, think he would do awesome against second units but running the show at point might be too much for him.
Green will have a few seasons to prove he can became a perennial All Star. Sengun could be a solid starter for contending team, and maybe make a few All Star appearances if lucky. Tate, Matthews, and some of the other guys could someday play a minor role off the bench for a contending Rockets team, if they somehow stick around. But I wouldn't be surprised to see them in another uniform in a few years, either.
