Tom Jackson almost cried. That was hard to watch. I thought the 15 minutes they dedicated to it was about 5 minutes too much. It wasn't a complicated issue, Rush Limbaugh is an idiot, everyone knows this.. they weren't responsible for what he said.. he screwed up (like no one saw this coming) and got fired. Time to move on. The only thing that sucks about all of this is that Rush refuses to acknowledge that his comments were horribly inappropriate and a gross hatefilled lie.
I wonder how many interviews McNabb has done in the last few years about being a black quarterback in the NFL? I'm guessing zero. I don't remember the last time the media even referred to a "black" quarterback before last week.
Rush resigned because NFL countdown does not have a live hookup to the Betty Ford center, where he will be spending the next ffew months. Even if he didn't say a thing about Mcnabb or black qb's, he would be resigning soon anyway.
I'm guessing many. I went to do a search on it but, of course, there are a lot of immediately recent stories and I don't have time to dig back through them all.
If you're being facetious, I suggest you use a smilie or some other clue to indicate such. Why would you so bluntly incriminate me by insinuation without knowing me at all?
God, I remember how sick and tired I got of interviews with Steve McNair, Mike Vick, Akili Smith, Quincy Carter, Anthony Wright, Warren Moon, et al. just because they were black. The conservative bull**** exuding from giddyup's mouth is a thing to behold.
Wish there was edit, oh well. Didn't necessarily mean bull**** or conservative per se, I guess just misinformed. I guess I was angered and confused how the "liberal" stance on this issue could be considered arrogant, especially when you can cite numerous examples where QBs were not hyped because of their race (see my previous post).
RM95, what is emanating from my mouth is neither conservative or liberal. I think it is just plain common sense. I don't think most of you here accurately apprehend what Rush said, you just labeled it as racist and on with the show. You make it out to be what you want it to be. I think that is intellectually dishonest. My retort was mostly to timing and somewhat to GV76. Thier forehand and backhand insults were not welcome. Ask any of the more conservative posters here, that is a frequent and typical resort of the more liberally persuaded. Yes, when they insult me for my opinion, I might sling some mud back but I try not to insult somebody just because I don't agree with their opinion about some issue. Rush never said that every black QB was hyped because of their race. He said it about Donovan McNabb. Get the story straight and don't stretch it, please. You are seeing this thing too much as a black and white thing (no pun intended) whereas it is really mostly many shades of gray.
You stated you agreed with comments that have been labeled bigotted and ignorant. I just wanted to make sure you realized what company you were holding. You apparently don't. Are you about to cry po' giddy?
When it comes to race matters, certain types enjoy making comments and then playing dumb when others get riled up, thus demonstrating his emotional superiority over us nasty liberal types: "He's from Michigan, I don't know, maybe [wetback] means something different there"
If you weren't being so arrogant about this, you would realize that there is no universal acclaim about the meaning of what Rush said. In fact, I'd say that there is a huge misunderstanding-- much of it intentional. Try re-reading the Slate article, for instance. I agree that McNabb is over-hyped. I also said that he could be my quarterback anytime after McNair retires. He is a helluva QB. I don't agree with Rush on that one. Mostly I agreed with Rush's right to express an honest, informed opinion and I strongly disagree with the dishonest attempts to misrepresent and squelch him. No tears here... except maybe a few of laughter!
I'd like to see you or Rush or any other person somehow prove to us that McNabb is overrated because he is black. If you took a simple poll before this Rush thing about whether McNabb is overrated, I'm guessing the results would be 50/50, 40/60, or 60/40. There is absolutely no proof that he is overhyped by the media for no other reason than he's perceived as an exciting player. Not because he's black. If you want to believe that, then you must provide answers as to why Mike Vick, Steve McNair, or any other black QB hasn't been hyped by the media.
You shouldn't even have responded, what a waste of time. The meaning of what Rush said? Are you on crack? LOL You agree with Rush's right to express honest, ignorant opinion but disagree with the "dishonest" attempts to trash that honest, ignorant opinion? What are you a commie or something?
Rush never said that every black QB was hyped because of their race. He said it about Donovan McNabb. If it's just McNabb, what makes you think it was his race? If it was his race that caused him to be hyped, that would imply that other black QB's would have been hyped too. There's just as much evidence that he was hyped because he was black as there is that he was hyped because his name is Donovan. In fact, there's more evidence for the latter because it would explain why specifically only he was hyped as opposed to all the black QBs.
Personally, I don't think the media is desirous to see a black quarterback do well simply because the color of their skin. Why would they give a damn about that? However, I do think the media is desirous to seem more speedy, athletic, ankle-branking quarerbacks perform well simply because...the more exciting they are, the easier they are to sell. It just so happens that many of these types of quarterbacks are black. So, I think there is indirectly some truth in Rush's statement.
"He started off playing a chauffeur in 'Driving Miss Daisy,' and then they elevated him to head of the CIA, and then they elevated him to president and in his last role they made him God. I just wonder, isn't Rush Limbaugh right to question the fact, is he that good an actor or not?" -- Pat Robertson on his "700 Club" television show, using the example of black actor Morgan Freeman to defend Limbaugh's jab at Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb.
