The argument is we would be taking too big cap hit and putting too much money into the QB position and upgrading only marginally to Plummer. Instead we could keep the average QB and upgrade the rest of the team. I'd rather have Plummer or someone else than Carr. But not if it comes at too big an expense.
right. and i'm the one who routinely exaggerates others' positions to solidify my own.... no one has said this, MM. not a single person. not even close.
This conversation is needlessly bogged down in minutiae. The best thing for David Carr's career and the best thing for the Texans' franchise are one in the same: cut him.
actually, that's what started the debate - the cap ramifications of cutting him. it's not necessarily the best thing for the texans.
I've eaten crow time and time again about that. I've admitted to my 180 degree turnaround on this issue.
It seemed cutitng him was easier on the cap than trading him, unless I misunderstood. Wasn't it a $4M hit?
i was just being sarcastic, ric. taking a point out to an illogical extreme. the second part of that, though, seems to be exactly what Mr. Clutch just said.
I'd rather bite the bullet and take the cap hit. Cap wise it may be a step backwards, but sometimes its best to take one step back to take two forward Whats the alternative? Ride out his contract and let the organization flounder while the good players bolt when their contracts are up. Make a move, infuse some hope into this organiztion.
Well, I didn't write this: So then if Grossman is an example of an average QB on a team that still wins, they why shouldn't the Texans model that example and keep Carr and continue building the defense?
right. gotcha. whatever works for ya. because i'm not a smart ass at all. ever. never. not in my nature. like, right now, this is probably reading smart ass, but, it's not. i'm dead serious. always. speaking of taking points to illogical extremes... first of all, what good players? second of all, he's been here five years; name one player who's left the team because of him. if he's traded, yes, it's $4M this year. if he's cut, it could be $4M this year; or it could $2M this year, $2M next year. they can choose, though it's a bit more complicated than that. the point is, if you're going to be paying carr/rosenfels/draft pick $5M-$7M regardless, are you really better off adding plummer's salary to it? that depends on your opinion of plummer. personally, i'd rather just keep carr - he's still only 27 and i don't think plummer's a significant enough of an upgrade to swallow $4M when i could get similiar production from carr and use plummer's salary on... a lineman, or whatever.
Exactly. I actually want to get rid of Carr. But if we decide to keep him to avoid the cap hit, it's not the end of the world. Teams can win with average QBs.
AJ is one I would be upset about and I could see it happening. I don't think any have left so far because of him, but in the future I wouldn't be surprised.
