This. I don't like the trade given the fact that Hines isn't getting any younger, but Holmes' off-the-field incidents and immaturity are long documented. Add to that his impending free agency status, possible four game suspension and the need to send a message -- it's not COMPLETELY irrational.

The Steelers will get killed tomorrow and I fully expect the Yinzers to be up in arms. Hell, I've gotten close to 20 texts already since news broke. It won't be a popular move but it's certainly not the end of the world.

....and no, Ben isn't going anywhere.

I'm not sure how many Steeler fans will be pissed. I for one am happy he was traded... I'm hoping for some more spring cleaning! But, I confess I wish it was for a bit more than a 5th. :/

Simmons tweet reply to a message that is probably spot on.

sportsguy33: I like this theory. Why give him away though?
@pittopticalguy: You think the Holmes trade was a message to Ben to clean up or be gone?

Hines Ward is getting older and you get rid of your number 1 deep threat? Holmes is worth at least a 3rd round pick with the troubles.... without the troubles he's 2nd round talent trade worthy. Mike Wallace had an impressive rookie season and I think he's going to continue to do well but damn Holmes for only a 5th round pick?

there has to be something more, and the steelers just went with the the first team that showed up. I mean teams would have give more than 5th round pick.

How things change, a year ago, he was the heroe that got the steelers another superbowl and was the superbowl MVP, and now he was traded for a 5th round pick.

I've gotta believe that if the Steelers had made it known that Holmes was available, there would have been another team that would have given up more than a 5th round pick. If you're gonna give him away, at least give him to an NFC team!!

    /Steeler hatred grows even more

I've heard Colin Cowherd comment a few times only in the NFL would you trade someone like Brandon Marshall for a 2nd round pick when he's probably the best in the game.

Still, a team might trade a 5th round pick for a Ted Ginn type generic WR/Kick Returner. Santonio Holmes was 7th in the NFL in passing yards last season.

Rex Ryan isnt giving a damn over there. He'll have a contract waiting for Plaxico Burress once he gets out of jail.

Now I'm hoping Holmes screws up some more and does get a year long suspension...the Jets have a strong playoff push and then make a bunch of logical moves that have them looking at superbowl contention.

meanwhile the texans, who were this close to squeezing in the playoffs with/instead of the Jets, snooze through another offseason.

Again, here's to hoping Holmes, Edwards and Cromartie have a little too wild parties in NYC.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. They didn't get fair value for Holmes, who is a legit #1 receiver. Now they have to address receiver through the draft, which is weak at the position.

Very cheap. I wish the Titans had gone in and offered a 4th.

    WOW!!!

Edwards, Cromartie and now Holmes for Sanchez targets

And with Tomlinson joining Shonn Greene in the backfield with a stud Offensive line?

And the #1 defense in the country?

    Pretty Good!!!! Go Jets!

Roethlisberger wasn't charged with anything. I suppose that was all "blatant racism" as well.

The Jets are looking to be a strong org. for some time...making some good moves, IMO.

I can't wait for the draft!

For everyone that keeps saying the Steelers should have gotten more for him I'm pretty sure they tried and maybe they just failed.

I doubt the Steelers just let him go for a 5th without trying to get a better pick.

    LOL!

I remember wanting Sweed, Kelly or Thomas over DeSean Jackson in the 2008 draft.

Word around these parts is the Steelers were ready to outright cut him and then simply took the best offer available just to get rid of him.

Cromartie plays cornerback but yea they have a dangerous receiving core now with Holmes, Edwards, and Cotchery, and not to mention TE Dustin Keller.

We can only hope Sanchez doesn't improve much and suffers from problems a young quarterback would have because HE is literally the only thing holding them back from winning it all

Just to put some perspective on this for those that say they should've gotten more for him or that the Steelers are being "racist"...

    1. This is the final year of Holmes' contract. He's serving a four game suspension for a SECOND drug bust and facing more possible charges for assault (something he's also not new to). If you follow the guy on Twitter and read some of the ridiculous things he posts on there, it is obvious that he feels no remorse for anything that he has done and he is very likely to continue repeating this behavior. I GUARANTEE you that he will eventually come across a year long ban a la Pacman Jones.

    2. Racist?? really? They didn't fire/cut the guy.. they TRADED him. Santonio has said he was going to leave for a bigger market anyways, so he probably sees this as a favor. Ben isn't facing any charges whatsoever... and on top of that he is the franchise QB who is locked up beyond next year (unlike Santonio). Santonio was going to leave after this year anyways, and they were tired of putting up with his antics. There is no debate that Santonio deserves to be treated more harshly than Ben does at this point. Hell, the guy was arrested TWICE between the time he was drafted and his first game.. and it just keeps coming. Bottom line is the guy is crazy and you just don't know what he's going to do next.

A fire sale?? Because they got ride of one guy? and the most troubled WR at the moment in the NFL?

Also I think people are forgetting (or just dont know about) Mike Wallace. Mike Wallace IS the Steelers deep threat (he was a rookie last year) and is a pro bowler in the making.
