Indeed. I wonder how many people realize that Calvin Murphy was a second-rounder.

Im really glad Hill is set to be in this deal if it goes through. He is the icing on the cake. The batter being the picks

The remaining negotiating point is protection on the draft picks the Rockets would gain in the trade. The Rockets want no protection on either the swapped 2011 or 2012 first-round picks but the Knicks want protection in case the team misses the playoffs, and is in the lottery, either year. ESPN reports that the Knicks are looking for top-10 protection.

If I stay up all night and tomorrow just pressing "reload" until the trade deadline passes does that make a dedicated fan or kinda pitiful?

Knicks only team left for McGrady

The Tracy McGrady Sweepstakes became a one-horse race when the Bulls dropped out of the bidding to do another deal, leaving the Knicks in prime position to make their cap-clearing coup.

In a wild NBA-trade-deadline eve with the Knicks trying to complete a very complex deal sending Nate Robinson to Boston for Eddie House, the Rockets and Knicks were negotiating on protection of the first-round picks involved in their mega-deal.

All signs pointed to the McGrady deal being worked out and the Knicks securing him and enough 2010 salary cap space to sign two maximum free agents this summer.

Through much of Wednesday, the Knicks and Rockets were in a staredown on the picks involved. Sources said the Knicks wanted to protect their 2012 first-round pick through the sixth spot.

In other words, if the Knicks wound up with the sixth pick or better, they'd keep it and give up a 2013 pick. Also part of the deal is the Knicks and Rockets swapping first-rounders if Houston chooses to, and the Knicks wanted that protected as well.

The Rockets told the Knicks it was a deal-breaker and they would take the Bulls' lesser offer if the Knicks didn't leaves the picks unprotected.
But when the Bulls formally pulled out, the Knicks suddenly had much better negotiating position and were still willing to give up Jordan Hill as long as Jared Jeffries was in the deal, too.

"Hypothetically you always love draft picks,'' Mike D'Antoni said. "But you’ve got to do ... We’re going to set it up to where we’re going to take our best shot.”

xiki note: How 'bout Clips 2nd rounder (from Denver) and unprotected 2012?

The higher the position, the more options you have..

Here is a draft pick analysis by 82 games. It's a little old, but things haven't changed that much. Once you get down 60th pick, there are no players with a combined 20(pts+rebs+assists) game. Out of 10 year's worth of drafts, there might be 1 Arenas level talent in the 2nd round.

like i said, hill was always included in the package. i think before the bulls came in, swapping this year's draft picks weren't protected, but 2012 was. but now the bulls withdrew, the knicks want this year's protected as well.

eventually, i think only 2012 will be protected. morey asking for 2 unprotected picks + a lottery pick last yr in hill is too much and he knows it.

the deal will be done with the picks protected, esp. 2012.

If I had to choose between taking on Jeffries for one year at 7.5 mill with the kicker and Hinrich for two at an average of 8.5 mill, I think I'd choose Hinrich. I wonder if Hinrich, Miller, Thomas and a pick for T-Mac, Cook, Andersen and Dorsey would be something Chicago would consider.

Wow, are we really tripping about a pick being top 6 protected? I can see if it was lotto protected, but top 6? Flame me but I agree with the NY guys....Morey is trying to rape them (I'm all for it though). A young big man and two unprotected picks is a lot....

Wonder how that would affect resigning Scola and Landry.

In LIEU of the 2011 first round swap??? No way. For crying out loud, the latest reports are that the Knicks want top 10 protection only. Do you really want to turn down a chance at even a top 11-12 pick in exchange for (what hopefully is) a pick in the 22-25 range? You could buy that Clippers second rounder 3-4 times over for what it would cost to make that move up in the first round.

Add the Knicks' own 2010 second rounder, and THEN Morey can agree to some reasonable level of protection on the 2011 and 2012 first round picks.

The problem is they want BOTH picks to be protected. Since the 2011 draft pick is a swap that kind of defeats the purpose.
