No kidding. Firm on that pick, generous on the later one.

While that is often the case, protections can be whatever the parties want them to be.

Sometimes, protection will "burn off" (which is what you are describing).

Sometimes, protection will be the same over several years before being removed.

And sometimes, if a pick falls within the protected range for enough years, the first round pick will become two second rounders.

Here's hoping that Morey can at least negotiate a quick "burn off" of any protection negotiated.

It will be especially frustrating collecting on BOTH the 2011 and 2012 picks with any protection. If the 2011 is protected, then the next possible pick the Rockets could get in lieu of that pick (because they'll already have the 2012 pick) is either a 2013 swap of picks or a 2014 pick. Same with the 2012 pick protection.

It's possible that, if the Knicks really suck for long enough, the Rockets might not see those picks until 2015 or so.

I think morey will be able to pull off a complete burn off by 2013. Donnie Walsh will be in nursing home by then what does he care. :p

I would kill to be a fly in the wall in Morey's front office or wherever the hell he does is business and negotiation skills! If a Genie asked me right now for ONE wish and ONE wish ONLY, I would not ask for sex with Megan Fox, money. or even going to heaven! I would ask that Genie, " Oh Genie, I wish I was a fly in Rockets General Manager Daryl Moreys office!

That's right. Here is a good list of draft picks owed to each team.

    http://www.draftexpress.com/transactions.php

I'll pick NY's current draft pick as an example. NY had less and less protection after each year, until they had to give up their 2010 pick to the Jazz.

I dont think the Rockets will get what they are aiming for which is only 2 things.

    1) Deeper Pocket book - according to Les

    2) Championship trophy - according to Morey

Teams are bidding against themselevs, because who they are after is one thing and what teams are providing is another which makes it quite obvious.

We both said "MLE-sized contract", meaning a salary equal to the MLE amount. Not the MLE itself.

Damn! I didn't know that we gave up our 2nd round 2010 pick from that Gerald Green trade? This draft was supposed to be loaded with talent, and with Morey's skills of finding great players in the 2nd round such as Brooks and Landry, this woulda been huge! Freakin Gerald Green!

How much you willing to bet that the Wolves will have a worse record than the Clippers? I don't know what we were thinking in trading that pick for Gerald Green.  Was CD GM at that time?

Good point who did they move for Green? Did they cut him later to make roster space? So instead of wasting a 10 day contract it was used to trade for a player then cut him for another player 'i think' That was a good move at the time, but as we look back man what kind of move was that unless it was to reduce payroll?

Why are you so upset? Trading that pick saved Les millions of dollars, some of which (indirectly) he used to buy picks to draft Taylor, Llull and Budinger.

Plus, if the Rockets make the Knicks trade (picks or not), Les will save about $7-10M more this season, some of which he can use to buy a pick BETTER than our current second round slot.

(And, as an aside, the Rockets don't have roster space for more than one rookie at this point. Frankly, I'd be happy to add the late lotto/mid-first round pick to the roster and call it a day, draft-wise.)

Sergio Lull, who it was reported to be a beast, was a 2nd round pick. This year, there is this supposed 7 footer from Europe that's good and is most likely gonna drop to the 2nd round.

The Knicks were still working hard to acquire Houston’s Tracy McGrady and his $23 million expiring contract, a move that could create enough payroll room to sign two superstars this summer.

It could be the most important trade the Knicks have made in a decade. But the signs were still murky late Wednesday night.

“I’m hopeful,” said the team’s president, Donnie Walsh, without commenting on any specific proposal.

The hangup in the McGrady deal involves two first-round draft picks that the Rockets are demanding in the trade, in 2011 and 2012. The Knicks want protection on the picks in case they fail to sign a superstar and end up in the draft lottery. The Rockets want the picks free of restrictions. The standoff began on Tuesday.

The rest of the deal is set. Houston would acquire the rookie Jordan Hill, Larry Hughes and Jared Jeffries for McGrady, Brian Cook and Joey Dorsey. The Rockets want the unprotected picks as compensation for taking Jeffries, who is owed $6.9 million next season, plus a $2 million trade bonus.

Unloading Jeffries’s contract would give the Knicks about $31.5 million in cap space this summer, nearly enough to sign two maximum-level free agents. The belief is that the Knicks have a better chance to land LeBron James if they can also sign another elite player, like Chris Bosh.
