If Dwight gets here, will he leave potential salary dollars on the table?
If Dwight gets here, will he be turned off by Chinese endorsements?
    These odds aren't 50/50.

I don't think we will end up with two picks in the top 10, but if Morey somehow does pull it off, it would help launch the rebuilding effort so many of us have been waiting for. It sounds like we'd make a play for Howard using those picks. As hard as that would be to pull off, if it happens, the front office better get two things right:

    1) Howard's health. I don't want to see a repeat of the Tracy McGrady back problem saga. This guy better be healthy and ready to play several more years in good health, at the top of his game. The medical staff has to be right on this.

    2) Howard's free agency next year. This cannot be a one-and-done situation. You cannot give up two high lotto picks for a one-year rental; especially not when you need to rebuild.

If the front office can't address both of those concerns, it's not worth trading two high lotto picks. Personally, i'd like to build something that lasts. I'd like to usher in a new era of home-grown rockets that the fans can root for and be proud of. I always hated the way Miami bought their championship in a fly-by-night kind of way. It doesn't feel as good as building a team from the ground up, where fans have emotional attachments to players and feel like they have something at stake in the team.

But ...if we can bring a healthy Howard over for the long-term, it would obviously be worth it.

man this stuff has come up each and every year every single time around the draft for the last i dunno how many years... nothing ever ends up happening other than us keeping our pick and picking a 6-9 forward every year, and yet i keep on falling for it again and again after so many years, even though i know in the back of my head nothing will result out of anything.

and here i am all excited about this again .... T-T

I think this is the first time in a long time that the Rockets have been offering a deal as good as a good starter at beginning of his prime, the 14th, and/or 16th to move up.

It takes two to Tango. Very rarely do you want your team to be the one trading down in the NBA.

If you get Dwight, Deron Williams will most likely follow here. While dwight may be a 1-year rental, Deron Williams signing a FA contract this offseason would mean Deron Williams would still be here. Essentially, trading Dwight Howard would mean landing Houston its mainstay superstar. However, it's not Dwight Howard. Howard staying beyond the 2012 would be a plus. A huge plus at that.

This is my first time posting even though I read clutchfans every day. I would normally stay quiet but this touches a nerve.
I maybe in the minority, but I feel like even getting Howard, we are still not going to compete for a title this year (with the belief that he will walk after). If we are moving up to get 2 top 10 picks, why not keep them both and begin rebuilding.
We could get a 7 foot 18 years old center and posibally a replacement for Lowry ( Lillard or Marshall) or a leaving soon Martin ( Lamb, Rivers or Waiter).
We have been screaming build from the draft for some time.... now is the time.

Actually, if we trade Martin and Lowry (plus the #14 and #16) to get Howard in a rental, and Howard walks in a year, we have no players, but then, we will probably have tons of cap space. DM might take on a bad contract as part of all this, but he will have factored that in so that it expires when we need it to - say, 2014, maybe 2015. By having that awful contract, we are helping ourselves to suck for the first year or two after Howard bolts, which means, high draft picks, plus max cap space. Not bad.

I still would hang onto these two high draft picks we're supposed to be getting, but the one year rental plan doesn't suck.

Keeping on the Howard rental, another thing that separates us from most teams that have tons of cap space, we have a GM with discipline. DM is not going to blow all that cap space on losers, just because he can't get the players he wants with it. He will give it up in one-year deals, so as to maintain the space.

Too many variables in all this, anyway. Now the entire league could be onto what we're up to---unless, of course, the media has it wrong; it's a bit of a step to say we're after BOTH top 10 picks (although it could be right).

No, now you have 10 or 12 GMs other than Morey calling both Toronto and Sacramento to feel out information, not to mention potential c***blocks from Cuban or Prokhorov and anyone else.

You have a new GM in Orlando and they're all deluded about keeping their superstars rather than trading them. In any case, if he agrees to part with Dwight, caveat emptor: bad back, bad attitude, no great game (he's popular because he dunks) outside of defense...

I know Morey must be a high stakes poker player while I'm stuck in a go-fish mode, but can't we build a team with great young talent rather than with Brokeback Center?

Unless we're forced to take on one of Orlando's many sucky contracts.

I couldn't agree more. It took me an hour to read through all these pages and in the end i am wondering......why i wasted my time reading all this stuff when in all likelihood this scenario will not come to fruition.

If d-will isn't signed here along with howard traded here, morey would know Howard would not stay. He'd probably move him for bynum who would sign back. Howard would most likely sign there.

If it were up to me, I'd require an extension agreement before trading away a #5 overall pick for Dwight. And definitely a thorough physical to prove that he's healthy.

It would be an absolute travesty if we traded the #5 pick for Howard and he was hurt most of the year and bolted next summer.

Howard don't want to play here so I don't want him...not worth 2 high picks plus us taking on whatever crap contract orlando wants us take...
If he leaves after one year yeah we can rebuild but we will not have a high pick cause we would be a playoff team so we would have to wait another year to start the process..as good as Howard is I would rather get young talent to build around

did le$ just plant this stuff in the media again to make fans think he's actually doing something (besides sitting comatose in mediocrity indefinitely)?

I don't think there's any question that Dwight would want out. Even if we somehow got an extension agreement, we've all seen what happens when he gets disgruntled...

And this is what he wants: big market (nope) and star sidekick (nope). He wants to be in Brooklyn with his bud Deron, it's clear. He's a guy who winning isn't necessarily as important as expanding his brand (though winning will naturally come with being the best C in the league), and regardless of whether Morey can build a solid roster around him in that year, I highly doubt we can "change his mind" on what he wants.

To trade away a #5 and a #8...for a one-year rental...I really don't know what to say. If he bolts, this deal may put us in the cellar for the next decade, and lets just say there's a very high chance he doesn't sign an extension.

It seems Morey is obsessed with pulling off the big trade for a superstar. As the GM, it is his job to look at all options for improving the team. But, I think the Rockets have a golden opportunity to pick up a couple of good young players in a draft that most people feel is very deep. Orlando has failed to win any titles with Howard for all these years. Orlando surrounded Howard with a variety of different players and always came up short. I will be very disappointed if we trade picks and players to rent Howard for a year.
