http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/draft2008/columns/story?columnist=ford_chad&page=DraftGrades-080627 ------- I think we did alright, gotta see how the picks pan out next season, we were all furious with the Landry and Brooks draft selections last season and now we love em, so lets see...
i guess he doesnt know that by picking greene at 28 instead of 27 we got a second rounder next year? seems like a pretty obvious decision to me. get your facts straight Ford!
http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/draf...lumnist=hollinger_john&page=DraftRater-080622 ESPN seems to rate Greene higher than Mayo, which seems to be a good sign, although it's just what they see it as. I think Greene will have a good career.
That pick to get Memphis 2nd rounder next year was based soley on good intelligence about what other teams want...... Just amazing if you ask me, I am more impressed with that move than the Portland one. DD
Yeah they definitely did their homework and forced other teams into giving them more. Morey easily could have just taken Greene and Marty. Instead he picks up Dorsey and another 2nd. That's just taking the other 2 GM's to school.
i agree. especially when you consider that that move had to be calculated out with the presumption that the first move worked out as planned. thats a hell of a lot of "if this, then that" in the planning process. and the fact that its memphis in particular that he got the pick from is even more brilliant, because they are going to be a bad, bad team. i hear that many teams value top 2nd round picks higher than late 1st round picks, so it could be an awesome trade chip.
the portland trade was more due to portland knowing what the spurs want, and wanting to get batum before the spurs snatch him up. trading #25 for #27 and #33 is a great deal. then knowing what the grizz want and making them pay for it was awesome by morey and his staff. almost, pritchard like. morey's staff has been dead on 2 years in a row. great start for DM as a drafting GM.
Morey gets the player he wanted all along in Donte Greene and adds a high second round pick and need with #33 pick Joey Dorsey and adds another high 2009 second round pick from Memphis (who should suck big time in the west next season) to use as part of an attractive trade pawn in getting a veteran they want. He did all this with #25th pick, if Kevin Pritchard would have done this they would be labeling him a genious right now. Also the rockets getting the 2009 2nd round pick from Memphis could open up the idea of throwing in their own 2009 1st round pick in a potential trade, the rockets 1st round pick shouldn't be that far away from the Grizzlies second round pick. The rockets 1st round pick looks like it could be expendable when the chips are on the table while trying to make a trade.
Yeah, and remind yourself, thats a 2nd round pick from a crappy rebuilding team whos bound to lose 50 games
I'm still not sold on Donte Greene, but love the Joey Dorsey pick up. He plays D at the 4 spot, can rebound and is tough inside, but only problem is that he might not have the heart to play every night and he needs to stay out of trouble. Greene needs to work and polish his game and I guess we'll see next year. No way, unless there are major injuries, *knock knock*, he plays this year.
And that pick very likely will be in the top 2 of the second round. There is great great value there.
With how tough the west is, Memphis' 2nd rounder of 09 which is now our's will be high. After selling Gasol for bag of shiny objects, and now Miller, these guys are in complete tank mode. That 2nd rounder would be EXCELLENT trade bait at the trade deadline. To come out the draft with 2 picks and come out with the guy you wanted, a contributing big, a solid trade chip and well, maaarty, is great. It's like we had our cake and ate it too.
Thanks for the article, can't believe Ford missed the fact we got a 2nd round pick for next year. Arthur = PF and Greene = SF and we already have enough PFs, so it seems logical they took Greene instead of Arthur. What do you mean think Ford means by this though: Dorsey, if he gets his act together, could be the second coming of Ben Wallace.
