One thing I will mention, and I will only do so now that hope has returned, as otherwise it would merely have added more sour taste...( based on speculation )

Look at what we have an opportunity for here. Quality teams are falling over themselves to get this guy...top teams, lead by the Exec. of the Year, are firing very good coaches jjust because he's available...HP is saying that he's heard Brwon's owner asked for him to leave the East..ie, not make himself available to immediate competitors...8 million a year...

Not that conventional wisdom means everything, but this should give us an idea of what kind of asset this guy is seen to be.

Dont put your faith too much on one person, especially he is red hot and price is sky high.

I can't help but wonder if Brown is playing everyone at this point and trying to start a bidding war (more money; more power) for his services ................................

Well, maybe CD or Les was on the phone late last night when the Carlisle story broke.
Who saw that coming? I still think Brown now signs with Detroit, I just can't believe Dumars would have done this unless he felt sure, or had assurances.
Either Dumars or Les (I'm betting on Les) is going to have egg on their face about this. The only thing we have in our favor is that I agree a Brown/CD combo sounds more logical than Brown/Dumars one.
I don't really blame Les too much, but I hate that pro franchises are such corporate entities now that they can't risk publically saying "I think this is the guy we need, I'm going after him, if I fail, I fail". But that's considered bad PR, but I'd respect it a hell of a lot more than I do listening to CD trying to tap dance.
And I hope that every interview started with "You do realize that the pajamas are gone, right?"

sheesh....if Brown made a promise to Dumars resulting in firing Carlisle then reneges, then he's a serious prick.

8 M is more than enough for a coach, how much Jackson and Pop earned from Lakers or Spurs.

I bet he will asking more control of the team. After all, he can't be a coach forever. Every GM who want to hire him may be his employee someday. Who knows how funny it is!!

Les can pay Brown $20 mil and it wouldn't bother me. Its the power thing that does. I would very concerend if part of Brown's demands were to have full control over player personnel (thus negating CD as a GM and Rudy as a consultant). Not sure I would want him if he wants to handle both jobs.

my thoughts exactly on the third page of this thread:

I tend to think that this hasn't really been decided yet.

Which could explain why he would say he hasn't made up his mind yet. To deflect the criticism. Like his stand to not talk to Washington because Collins still had the job (at the same time he was talking to Detroit behind Carlisle's back (maybe)).

Wow, talk about unexpected. If the Pistons get Brown I'd be ecstatic to get Carlisle. This guy is an excellent coach. Just look at that crap roster in Detroit and what he's done with it. He's even used two different types of players as his primary scorer in a slasher like Stackhouse and a jump shooter in Hamilton. The guy can coach his ass off and I have no doubt he could get the most out our roster.

If it turns out to be true that Les didn't give Brown an offer during their meeting though I'm going to be pissed. Talk about dropping the ball in a major way.

The problem I have with this is that it doesn't fit with LB's past actions. When Washington wanted to interview him, LB said no because they still had Collins as coach/GM. However, Carlisle is fired and Brown hired in a matter of hours in Detroit. So we've got a few choices.

    A) LB didn't want Washington at all and Collins was just a decent excuse.

    B) LB didn't think as highly of Carlisle and has been negotiating with Detroit on the down-low.

    C) Dumars is blowing smoke and trying to scare off other teams by saying he's signed, sealed, and delivered.

    D) LB said something to the effect that "Sure I'm interested" to Dumars and is trying to play off Houston and Detroit to see what he can get.

Personally I could see any of these, and that's just the one's I've been able to come up with. In the meantime, let's see what happens Monday before we start panicking and/or burning Les and CD in effigy.

Did Dumars say that he hired Brown? I thought ESPN said a "source" said that Brown would be announced as head coach.

It's not a done deal yet:

(From espn.com): ESPN has learned that, despite reports Larry Brown will take the job, a deal isn't done yet.

AP sure has jumped the gun on all of these coaching changes! i wonder what the real story is!

i don't think it was about money. joe dumars wanted to play the rookies (mehmet okur and tayshaun prince) and carlisle was initially hesitant to do so.

regardless, cd, please interview carlisle

hey we win either way if brown is hired. hell either get this team to the next level or quit after a few years and the young talent will have still had the benefit of his teaching. then wed just have to find another coach and im sure some of these guys like dunleavey and whoever else will be available! as long as we dont get phil jackson. i hate that guy...

man i hope brown doesnt waste his time in detroit. everyone would lose there.

If I'm Brown, then I would have reservations about coaching the Pistons. The last guy got them to the conference finals in two years and was fired.

If he chooses Detroit, then that'll be his problem and deservingly so.
