Why would we even contemplate getting Riley. He isnt a teacher, he only knows how to handle Stars (Lakers) &(NY). Miami, hes past it!

I swear. You keep saying this. Yet, aren't we a team of stars (Yao, Steve and Mobley) who need a coach that brings them to the next level (like Jackson and Riley have proven they can do)?

We have our 3 stars. One of whom will now be going into his sophomore season and needs a teacher to help him realize his potential. The rest of the team aren't exactly veterans who are solid role-players. Kato is doing exactly what we want him to do and Rice is done. Posey is only a factor if he is resigned.

We still need a teacher, someone to discipline and improve this team in practice, not just call a good game. That's why Riley is considered to be a very poor fit for this team.

While I admit that Riley is not the best teacher, two of his forters are his discipline and his practices.

He runs good hard practices... but if he isn't teaching during them then they are just learning the offense and defense better, not how to improve themselves. Don't get me wrong, the team game is very important, but by improving the individuals directly the whole team takes that next step.

I'm not saying Riley is a bad coach, he's just not the right coach for this team or any other young team without playoff experience.

But how do you know Riley does not teach in practice? Hes never really had to. Ultimately, thats probably why he would never come here. At his age and point in his career, he might not want to deal with the mess of Francis, Mobley and Griffin.

Not wanting to teach or not being very good at it, same result. Either way it means we don't need to consider him as our next coach.

Just because you don't want to teach, doesn't mean you are not good at it. And when did Riley every say he didn't want to teach?

Perfect example is Detroits hiring of Brown. Is it possible that he his tired of teaching and instead wants to take a job where the team is primed to win already? Maybe Brown doesn't feel like teaching a team like the Rockets anymore. That doesn't mean hes not good at it.

I drew this as your meaning from this statement:

I take this statment to imply that Riley wouldn't want to come here because he's never had to teach and doesn't want to now.

Those people in the Detroit organization are soooo slick. The more I think about the timing (e.g. Sat news conference announcing Carlisle's firing and Sun leak about Brown's signing), the more I think, "Detroit was totally negotiating with Brown in secrecy." How does a team complete the courtship process of a coach that fast??? It all sounds very shady to me. And it's a good thing Carlisle is a good sport. b/c if I were him, I'd be crying foul from the first day I was giving the pink slip.

It's not so much that Carlisle was a good sport. Carlisle needs to secure another job whether that's in coaching or a broadcast booth.

If he's been involved in some kind of abuse or something he could be a real PR nightmare wherever he goes. I've no idea what Billups is refering to but it raises a red flag.

    Outitan,
Why don't you actually read your post this time before responding. Are you trying to tell me you weren't making the case that the opinion of the players matters more than the track record of the coach (Carlisle in this case?). Like I said before, the players' opinions on who the head coach should be matters not to me as today's NBA player has proven to me winning is secondary. Why the hell should anyone care what the players thinkif they truly want the team to win.

Becuase he's been a winner everywhere he's ever been. The man hasn't ever experienced losing until these last two years and need I remind you that those were the last two years when franchise player and MVP candidate, Alonzo Mourning went down, a player with such a large salary, that the Heat couldn't take any measures to replace him. Seriously, I think some people on these message boards either have very short memories or they need to put down the weed.

Yeah, Clutch probably wishes he had that one back, but let's face it. A miracle really did happen in Detroit firing the guy who has been the best coach in the NBA the past two years in order to position themselves to hire Brown.

What I was saying was that instead of just grabbing up this guy right now, which was my first reaction, lets check into his background and see if he's got issues.
Players opinion matters if its based on a fact. If the fact is that a guy has socialization issues then Les and CD are likely to look elsewhere rather than deal with a problem personality.

So while I wasn't saying that a players opinion matters MORE, I was saying that a players opinion matters. If it turns out that the player was just b****ing, no big deal. If it is just one player (and apparently its not because several posters have since stated that he has a reputation for being a bad person) no big deal.

Red flag means to investigate the situation and find out whats going on, not fire this sucker immediately. Les and CD are unlikely to bring in a guy that will have the players and/or staff hating him from day one. Given the fact that Billups said the players liked him but that Carlisle had a way of mistreating people off the court suggests that he was arguing with management or other members of the staff. Billups wasn't stating that he wanted another coach, he was stating that

    On the other question:

You've never been a coach or been a manager within a team enviroment have you? If you have then you must be one hell of a pain in the ass. If you don't care what they think and just yell at them then they won't care what you think and won't listen. You don't have to bow to their will but you've got to listen and acknowledge their concerns or you'll lose them. Wanting all players to be gung ho with win at all costs attitudes won't make it so. If the league were full of players like Kenyon Martin (which it SHOULD be) then we wouldn't even be having this discussion.

.. the coach he had mistreated people off the court and that it had finally caught up with him.

ron413 - I'm not sure what I'm supposed to wish back - I am stunned they didn't get Brown. Brown-to-Houston was in the works some time ago .... he was the Rockets #1 choice, and the Rockets job was considered the best available. I had no idea Detroit would even play a role in this.
