Continuation of the earlier thought about Calvin:

Can you imagine what Cat and Wink's percentages would be if they shot everything open from 17 feet?

I know Calvin would love to coach the Rockets...The problem might be if the players get bored and tuned out when he starts ranting over and over about himself...

calvin is good at the announcers table. one thing is that, he's a great help to those "basketball-illiterates". you notice it? when something goes on, when the rocs are makin a play or suttin like that, he talks about it in "basketball language" so that people who dont really know basketball that much would understand the game more, thus, makin them enjoy watching the game. calvin is a great guy when it comes to basketball, and he may have some things he can pass on to the current rocs players.. but that's it.. i dont believe calvin can coach yet. there's is a fine line between coaching and knowing all about basketball.

Wow am I ever glad I left the party early... What a shock it was to read this information... My first thought was hell, lets take Carlisle but after reading this quote:

I've changed my mind. If his players are willing to say this kind of thing about him the day after he was fired then there has to be something wrong with his personality or personal life. If he's been involved in some kind of abuse or something he could be a real PR nightmare wherever he goes. I've no idea what Billups is refering to but it raises a red flag.

If Brown doesn't come here I won't be terribly disappointed. He wouldn't have been in for the long haul anyway. This would make Dunleavy my next choice of the available coaches.

It more likely means Billups thinks he was too much of a hardass, or something like that. Maybe he didn't kiss the player's asses enough.

could be, if it is then Carlisle needs to be interviewed A.S.A.F.P. He and Dumars did wonders with that team and he's only 42 so he could actually be around for more than a few years. He did show a sense of humor at the conferance, making jokes about not being able to get in to his own firing...

And the fact that GM's are firing competent coaches for just a CHANCE at Larry Brown is the only fact that matters in all of this. All of you anti-Brown posters obviously don't know a damn thing about the history of this league if you don't see the same value in Brown that the people who's jobs it is to make their teams win or else see in Brown. You are overspeculating. There are three great coaches in the NBA and Brown is one of them. There is a big drop off after the first three. I can't believe some of the posts I'm seeing on this board. Larry Brown is one of two coaches in the league for whom I see absolutely zero questions. Even Phil Jackson can be questioned (has he ever built a losing team into a winner?). It's laughable to me to hear people manufacturing all these supposed problems with Larry Brown before endorsing coaches like Van Gundy and Dunleavy who may end up being a good fit in Houston, but come with tons of more questions than you get with Larry Brown. I seriously have to ask where most of you get your news on Brown. Perhaps from the mouth of Allen Iverson????

I really don't give a damn what today's spoiled brat tyoe of NBA player thinks about anything. There's no discipline in this league anymore and it's eventually going to be the downfall of the NBA. It's all ready hurting the league's appeal if you haven't noticed.

One more thing. If the Rockets do not get Pat Riley or Larry Brown at this point, I think the only correct move is to wait for Rudy T to get well, then beg him to comeback. Personally, I didn't think the Rockets were heading in the right direction with Rudy T in recent years but I still think Rudy T is a better coach than Van Gundy, Dunleavy, and Silas.

    I would just like to say;

    WELCOME DEUCE RINGS

We need more posters who actually know NBA basketball.

Well if you want to turn a blind eye to LB's faults then that's your perogative. Larry Brown is a great coach I'll concede you that point. He would make the Rockets a winning team again that's for sure. I have NO doubts about his basketball knowledge nor his coaching ability. I questiion his head and his heart.

You simply don't go from job to job to job as LB has for no extraneous reason. Something is seriously wrong with this guy. The question you and all of the LB lovers out there need to be asking is what state will the Rockets be in 3 or 4 years from now WHEN LB jumps ship and moves on to Los Angeles. Will they be NBA Champions or a team in disarray like the 76ers?

BTW, I really believe that his family does NOT want to come to Houston so it'll be Los Angeles for the scenery or Detroit for the $$$. Either way, the Rockets will be better off hiring a coach who wants to be here for the duration. Say waht you want about Rudy T - at least he cared about this team and this city which is more than anyone can ever say about LB who only cares about LB.

I do agree that Rudy is a better coach than some of those guys. However, I think Rudy is also a better coach than Riley. Rudy's substitution patterns, and adjustments in the '94 series against a Riley coached Knicks leads me to give the edge to Rudy. However Rudy's substitution patterns of late, have left me confused.

Anyway, I do agree with you that the dismissal of Rudy was only a good move if we follow that up with an improvement in the coaches seat. If we got rid of Rudy and end up with less, then it was a horrible mistake.

My final thoughts on LB as Rockets coach: Be careful what you ask for. When you dance with the devil, the devil doesn't change. The devil changes you.

I agree, I wanted Brown, but the truth is that Brown is a bandaid, a temporary fix, and a vagabond. I wanted Brown for the short term good he would do the team, but hiring Brown would have also meant grooming the replacement the entire time Brown was here. That's a lot of extra work to do just to get Brown's teaching experience and disciplined on the court system. His style would have been a perfect fit for the team while he was here, but would it hold up after he left?

Only time will tell if our new coach can get a good effective system in place.

I can't be heartbroken and feel like all hope is lost because we didn't get the league's best bandaid as a coach.

Why are you quoting me before making this statement?

I don't believe I was discussing the state of the league, nor the discipline of todays players. I made no comment on Billups personality as I know next to nothing about him. The quote from Billups was that there were off the court problems with the way Carlisle treated people. He didn't say whom was being mistreated or how so, so we don't know to what he was refering. Billups comments show no loyalty, something very useful for a coach and team to develop regardless of the mindset of the players but this was not the main thrust of my post.

I was commenting on the fact that there may be a problem with Carlisle off the court that could result in a PR nightmare, thus making him undesirable as a coach. If he's a hard ass that's fine, I fully agree that discipline is desperately needed by our team and most of the players.

Why you felt this was a valid reply to my comments is unclear. If you have a statement to make fine, but don't quote me as if we're talking about the same thing.

You took a quote from Billups and used it to knock Carlisle's personal life or personality.

    Re-read your post. You said:

If his players are willing to say this kind of thing about him the day after he was fired then there has to be something wrong with his personality or personal life. If he's been involved in some kind of abuse or something he could be a real PR nightmare wherever he goes. I've no idea what Billups is refering to but it raises a red flag.

Why does there have to be something wrong with Carlisle's personal life or personality? Just because Billups said he wasn't treated right?

Billups is the only player you quoted, yet you said "players." Do you have quotes from other players? If so, do share.

Billups should look into a mirror.

No, I took a quote to question him, not knock him. I don't know anything about him beyond what i've read in the last two days and did not make any accusations or attacks on his character. I merely stated that since this comment had not been refuted or even oppossed that perhaps there may be some basis in fact. I then concluded that if there personal problems off the court these might have an impact on his appeal to Les at this critical time Rocket's history.

I'm willing to strike the 's' from players, no big deal.

I don't know anything about Billups, I have no way to judge him anymore than Carlisle as far as personallity. He may very well be a pig headed ego-maniac. But I don't know, offer me some 'proof' that he is (beyond your personal opinion) and I my alter my perception of his statements.
The article I pulled that quote from made no attempt to defend Carlisle nor crimalize Billups for his statement. Since no one has come out in the media or any of the boards to refute this statement I assume it has SOME foundation in fact.

That is however an assumption. Being as I am not in the postion to make personnel decisions for any NBA team I am allowed my assumptions, as are we all.

Perhaps you should try re-reading my post?

Billups did not say he was mistreated. He said that people, plural, were not treated the right way. That open ended quote could be talking about anybody from players to bell-hops.
