I didn't want to start a new thread on this, but in Chad Ford's chat with John Hollinger today (on the ESPN.com NBA page) they went over First Trimester Awards. Hollinger's pick for Coach of the Year was Jeff Van Gundy. He said his main criteria is to look at coaches who "do the most with the least." In particular, he pointed out that we're number 1 in defensive efficiency despite not having a lot of great individual defenders on the team.

this is a very generous ranking since we only beat the grizz and the nets which are two very underachieving teams.

The Nets have New Yorker's watching. That's the key to media perception.

Marc Stein in today's Weekend Dime defending the Rockets against Laker fans demanding to know why Houston was ranked ahead of them:

Stein has a very good point ... overall, Houston has had a fairly tough schedule to start the season, and LA hasn't. And we blew Charlotte out of their own house. 'Nuff said. :)

You're absolutely right. The Rockets are not better then the Pistons. They're better THAN the Pistons!

    ouch, nothing to say there.

he did get them to the playoffs though, despite expectations of a grant hill and tmac duo to lead them failed to come to fruition. basically, he carried them.

we need our star center back, then we'll see how good we are.

The only sports that care about respect are college football mostly, then college basketball for tourney selections.
You might think the Jazz are the 20th best team but if they make it to the finals and win, nothing you can do about it. Can't seed them as worst team in the playoffs cuz everyone "thinks" thats where they should be. Professional sports, team record and advancement into the postseason tells the story all by itself.
