http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=16761 Another front court player who is drawing a lot of interest is Houston Rockets forward Luis Scola, who is a restricted free agent. The Cavaliers have not reached out to Scola, though sources close to the situation tell HOOPSWORLD the New Jersey Nets are preparing a "big money" offer sheet for Scola. That doesn't mean the Rockets will let him walk . . .GM Daryl Morey has been very clear in saying they will match any offer for Scola. They're likely waiting for a team to set his value so they can match it and move on, just as they did with Carl Landry two summers ago.
The nets offered Travis Outlaw 7 million a year, so I reckon they would at least offer Scola 10 million a year. Morey needs to move in and resign Scola really speedily. Why does Morey always wait for someone else to sign his freeagents first? Cant he just go in and resign them like how Rudy Gay was instantly resigned by Memphis? By the looks of things there hasn't been any issues over the contract terms.
unless they offer him 60mil+ i don't see Scola walking. He seems like a pretty loyal guy anyway and was willing to play behind Bosh.
Not really. I think worst case scenario is a sign and trade. Plus, we'd get too see how Patterson looks as a starter. ROY anyone? .
that ok he is still pretty darn good, also if we plan to get an all star player in the next couple of seasons i think scola would have to be part of that deal, i think thats one of the reasons morey want to keep him. (ala knicks and david lee.)
scola is gonna be this good til hes 35 at least. hes that good and he doesnt rely on athleticsm to score. name me one other PF that has footwork as crafty as his postmoves. If scola gets anything less than 50 million then the nets are shooting themselves in the foot
exatly, most fans argue age.....but think about it, take a young athletic player player...Tyrus Thomas? 40 mill for 5 years......think about hte next 5 years.... Who do you think will have less injuries during such 5 years? Scola or Thomas? You can ask yourself the same for any young NBA PF....and analyze how likely is that such young players who are usually injury prone, is that hey will have less missing games than the 'old' Scola.... And it's very likely that at the end of the 5 year period, Unbreakable Scola will be having better performance than now....
agreed on most points. but it is true that a younger player will have improved stats down the length of the contract. whereas scola will never perform better than what he did last season with no Yao and all the offense going through him. But the most important thing is he fits in with the Rockets' championship contention window. The nets will be stupid to sign him to anything longer than 3 or 4 years. Scola is in his prime right now and by the time the Nets become formidable and the Derrick Favors and Brook Lopez reaches their prime, Scola would have already probably be near retirement. When faced with signing a older or a younger player, i feel we have already got enough young guys on the roster. We have either really young guys or really old guys...I think we need to sign a few guys who are actually in their primes, like Boozer and Amare status. I wouldn't really want to go for Brad Miller etc who are going to just turn out like Brent Barry. I'd rather pay big for a legit player in their prime like Lamar Odom last year
Anyone else get the feeling we're going to let Scola walk? With the interest in Kurt Thomas and Brad Miller, the drafting of PP, keeping Hill, Hayes and Andersen, Leunen looking pretty studly, along with the return of Yao, maybe Morey feels he's not worth keeping for 5 or 6 years at 10+ million per.
Agreed on most of your analysis, just regarding this particular issue, let me ask...what would make us think that Scola will be near retirement in 3 or 4 years? Given that unbreakable Scola has never been injured since arriving to NBA....Is is not true that durable bodies tend to play at his best level until his late 30s? Did you notice Jordan being awarded finals MVP and getting his 6th ring at 35? Why would we think that Scola would be washed up at 35?
They have to, he is a very valuable asset....Scola was what 19-9 for the team after the Landry trade. If they are willing to give Bosh 16 million they need to be willing to give Scola 10 for about the same production. DD
