I don't think he is ranking us for the upcoming season. This is just a ranking based on what moves each team made this offeseason and the buzz it created.

Slow down guys. The ranking you want will come out in a month or so...

That pretty much sums it up. I thought his analysis was fair and pretty spot on but then I am not addicted to the Rockets' red koolaid as are others here.

His analysis while not great, is not that bad.

My issue is with the rankings. The Rockets finished with the 16th best record last year without Yao and a major change mid-season (Martin for Landry). 17th is indefensible.

Let's take a look at some of his comments:

    - Yao is back, but may not be his dominant self. (Fair enough, but he must assume he will not be since he assumes the rockets will be the same as last year).
    - Yao and Miller are a nice center rotation. (This is positive right?)
    - Lee isn't as good as Ariza. (That's debatable, but probably true, statistically he's a better shooter, but I don't think his defense is as good).
    - Scola and Lowry coming back is a good thing. (okay, true, but hardly insightful)
    - Martin will play better this year because he's familiar with his teammates. (Most definitely, but apparently he thinks this has no impact)
    - Martin and Brooks will score ton of points. (Duh, master of the obvious).

So yeah, I'm still sticking with idiot.

the article is confusing. Is he ranking teams or is he ranking offseason acquisitions?

From my understanding he is ranking the whole team, but just discussing the changes that have happened in the off season.

Shoot, we're better than 17 without Yao or Miller or Lee. Throw out the team we had last year and without Ariza and we'd still be at or above .500.

Funny article. Assume Yao can't play (see yesterday) and just stands there. Also assume KM doesn't do anything, AB goes whack-job, Budinger cries for Mommy and Kyle doesn't do anything.

It's still reasonable that we'll probably win about 8-12 games more this year. Gotta love it.

...either Broussard is a complete Moron to rank Houston that low or he does a very poor job at communicating what that ranking is - either way the guy is a disgrace as a sports writer.

What about adding chris paul who was injured most of the year? I think the rox are anywhere from 5 to 9 in the west. Orlando, miami, and boston are all better. So that put them about 8 to 13 to me.

Yeah but they lost their PG depth by trading Collison.... that's a bigger loss than adding Trevor is a gain.

No team ever worries about depth behind a superstar. Who is kobe or lebros backup? I think they couldve gotten more for collison, but without paul, the team is going nowhere. I'm not saying the hornets are better than the rockets, but it wouldnt surprise me if they have the same record.

CB an idiot? Eh I don't know, but he is stating the obvious on his analysis. There is absolutely no real insight here. He's one of those guys I see on tv and think, what's he really know? I've never really seen him be right about much of anything, it's all opinion. I think his sources are pretty much crap and he seems to do very little homework himself. Very few espn guys have legit inside info, they break the news after it's been broken.

Because you are. We broke even without a center taller than 6'6. Now we have Yao Ming and Brad Miller. On the other hand the grizzlies didn't get anyone new (except their rookies whom they're lowballing). If the grizzlies were worse then us last year, why the hell would they get a better record than us this year? Does paying Rudy gay the max make him play like a max player?

I can't read the entire article as well but if he's just rating the off season, seems like a fair assessment.

    1. Yao's still in question until he actually plays and lasts.
    2. We added Miller and Lee which are both nice but hardly franchise changing.
    3. Martin has better exposure to the team dynamics.
    4. Nod to our rookie.

"Chris Broussard examines what changed for each team and what issues still linger, before ranking the teams from No. 30 to No. 1 for the coming season." - ESPN

Its one thing to imply that the Rockets won't make the play-offs in the western conference. It's the better conference top to bottom. It's another to say that the 8 teams that make it in the EAST will all be better than Houston(based on the analysis, only a few of them will be). I just don't see how the addition of Brad Miller and Yao at center doesn't push them way ahead of where they were last year. Also, Battier starting is better than Battier off the bench.
