    NewYorker,

How do you know Corey Maggette would work well or wouldn't work well in Rick's system?

Remember how hyped Baron Davis was when he got to the Clippers? He was better in Nelson's system.

Because Corey Maggette is a drive to the basket get fouled type of player. He's like Kyle lowry without passing ability.

Why would you want that? We need a triple threat player. A guy who can shoot, drive, and dish. Those 3 things.

Brooks is becoming one, but we need our Off-guard to be able to do that. Otherwise teams will be able to sag down on Yao and cut off the drive at the same time.

Maggette is not the guy that works with this team. I don't know why people think that. He can't shoot a long-range jumper for the life of him.

I thought the argument was based on what he had done, not what he had not, Mr. Derailer.

If we are going to argue effeciency, let argue effeciency. If we are going to argue playoff success, then....

PER is a per minute stat. So it should not over-rate high-usage players.

If anything, it is biased towards offensive play because it doesn't have much measure for defense. But I don't see how it over-rates high-usage players. Contrary, the criticizism has been that it is not accurate for low-minute players because of things such as fatigue would lower their PER, and having more minutes would give some players more confidence or feel for the game which would increase their PER.

The stats quoted, and what I was commenting on were based on career totals, not just the playoffs, which is why I asked the rhetorical question.

Regular season success is what we've had for along time.

Post season success, we just tasted it this season.

The reason people think that Maggette might work for this team is because that is their opinion, nothing more.

Virtually all of McGrady's value is in his expiring contract. Everyone in the league (including owner's and GM's) knows Tracy's record as a player. Trust me when I say nobody is trading for McGrady thinking he is the missing piece to being a contender. They are trading him to get the cap relief next summer. Don't be surprised if he is traded before he even plays a single game (I don't believe he will ever put on a Rocket jersey again).

Don't believe me? Wait and see which team trades for him (it won't be a good team) and then watch when that team does not even attempt to extend him next summer.

McGrady and his contract will go to another team, be allowed to expire and then some other team will pick up Tracy on a short deal for cheap so that if he doesn't work out they don't owe him much. Sorta like what Morey did with Francis.

Yep, it is based upon how he plays.

He moves great without the ball, which causes easy buckets for himself and others.

CM, IMO, fits perfectly into the role that Rick needs at the SG/SF scoring wing position.

Tmac could, but he doesn't move off the ball, is injured and may never be the same, and wants the ball in his hands, which is easy to guard in the 4th quarter.....

And the efficiency I am speaking about is putting the biscuit in the basket, the primary focus of the SHOOTING guard.

Maggette is very good at that, his points per shot attempt is always high, he rebounds ok, and he can make an occasional pass.

I would not build a team around him, but I think he fits better on a Yao centric team...NOW....

And, more importantly, he is attainable.....I am looking for players I think fit that we can acquire fairly easily without breaking up the core we are building with now.

BTW, Maggette's PER is right below Isiah Thomas.

    :D

Not sure how PER being per-minute means it doesn't overrate high-usage players. Usage is itself meant to be a per-possession stat, not per-game.

Here's the issue some people have with PER. Consider that you have a very inefficient scorer -- let's a say a TS% at .490. Suppose he usually takes 20 shots a game. If he increases his scoring attempts to 30 shots a game, maintains the same efficiency, and everything else (minutes played, rebounds, assists, etc.) stays the same, what happens to his PER? It will actually go up rather significantly. If PER was truly reflective of efficiency I wouldn't expect the rating to increase for an inefficient player when he shoots more often.

For more discussion on this topic, if you're interested, see this thread. Hollinger takes part in the discussion as well.

But why would a team make that deal now say opposed to Feb?

BTW for giggles, if we trade Tmac for Maggette and Biedrins you solve 2 problems.

    1. A scoring wing with a per of: 16.91
    2. A backup center with a per of: 19.16

So, you kill two birds with one stone......and we jettison a player who may not be able to come back, does not like the offense, and has questionable work habits for two players hungry to play on a winner.

    Winner winner, chicken dinner.

    Per stats page

I would want the ball in Tmacs hands considering how he draws double teams and can find the open man. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHKWJ8yCqBE

Not anymore, he has a broken wheel, and may not ever come back, it is all about asset management....trade him while his contract has value for someone you KNOW can play.

Because you have to play the worst case scenario card, what if he can't come back? You go to war with a shortened roster, hindered by his contract.

No, I think you get rid of it for players that can contribute NOW, not hope for him to make it back.

Will it really go up? That is surprising. I thought PER discounted missed shots.

There are two things that I think people forget to consider when discussing T-mac. I am merely bringing up PER to show that T-mac isn't as inefficient as people claim.

Another measure of that is that he scores about 1.2 points per shot. That's above the league average and in line with other stars. Now guys like Maggette and Ginobli will have 1.4 or higher, because their lives are around getting to the foul line and taking inside shots.

But T-mac does something that I think people forget. he takes the "bail out" shots. That is, when the team can't get a good shot off, it goes into T-mac's hands for the buzzer beater. He misses a lot, but hits just enough.

I really do feel that with this current team, and a healthy Yao - T-mac will enjoy a much easier time finding good shots and working within the team. I don't think he wants to carry the burden. People point that out here all the time.

In any case, we'll see what happens. I hope the guy gets well. It only helps the Rockets. Whether he gets traded now or later, or never, isn't up to me. But I wish the guy luck, and I hope he does make a comeback and a positive contribution to the team before it's all said an done. I think he's deserved a lot of criticism, but I think he's been slammed beyond that.

I don't think he is nearly as bad as he is painted to be. And the data can say he is a good player just as it can say he's a bad player. His ORTG isn't steller, but again, he hasn't had great t-mates except for Yao to help take defensive pressure away from him.

I hope he gets his chance.

Maybe they won't but he still isn't going to play for the Rockets again. However, I imagine he will be moved sooner than February simply because $23 million in cap room is something a lot of teams want to lock up for next summer ASAP. Someone will make a nice offer before they lose out on acquiring T-Cap (relief).

What's funny is I wonder who had the most pressure. McGrady for making the play or Novak catchin and shooting. McGrady could have easily shot it himself. Pull up bam game over we win :D

Its really not good to assume things :D We all don't know how McGrady will respond on the court after two surgeries. All we can do is pray and hope for the better. If you really look at it its a high reward low risk type of thing. If he responds good to the surgery then great. We have a guy who is capable of putting up superstar numbers. If it doesn't fair well then you have the option of trading him or keeping him and let his expiring run out and the Rockets can be greedy in the offseason :D
