Source: Michigan to make Miles announcement next week

Report: Les Miles Headed To Michigan

A source has told ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit that barring any unforeseen circumstances, Michigan will announce early next week it has reached an agreement with LSU coach Les Miles to be its next head football coach.

Herbstreit is also reporting that Miles will make Georgia Tech defensive coordinator and interim head coach Jon Tenuta part of his staff at Michigan.

Miles, who played at Michigan and served two stints as an assistant under the late Bo Schembechler, will succeed Lloyd Carr, who stepped down after the Wolverines' loss to Ohio State last month.

Miles has been head coach at LSU since 2005. LSU is 32-6 with Miles at the helm, including 22 wins in his first 26 games as coach, and won 11 games in 2005 and 2006. The No. 7 Tigers (10-2), whose two losses this season both came in triple overtime, will play Tennessee in the SEC Championship Game on Saturday.

Miles also coached at Oklahoma State, posting a 28-21 record between 2001 and 2004, and was tight ends coach for the Dallas Cowboys between 1998 and 2000.

Miles has a 60-27 overall record in seven seasons as a head coach.

not sure if it's been posted yet- I didn't see it.

With Miles leaving and Pelini reportedly going to Nebraska, LSU is going to be distracted in their remaining games.

LSU is losing Bo Pelini too. Should be an interesting offseason in Baton Rouge.

Sources close to both Les Miles and the LSU administration report the coach has reached a multi-year contract extension with his current school and will remove himself from consideration as the next Michigan coach.

A release will be forthcoming within the hour.

LSU will reportedly make Miles one of the highest-paid coaches in the country.

Earlier in the day, ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit reported Miles has agreed to become Michigan's next coach and will be introduced at a press conference next week. Herbstreit also said that Georgia Tech defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta would accept the same position on Miles' staff at Michigan.

But LSU and its coach were already putting the finishing touches on a deal to keep him in the Southeastern Conference.

This has a Dick Rod to Alabama feeling (ie media announcing coach has accepted job).

Wow, simultaneously misleading two schools at the same time. Saban x 2. First saying he has no intention of going to Michigan, then agrees to a deal (every coach does that ... i guess), then pulling the rug out from under Michigan in a "HA! Joke's on YOU!" move.

Personally, the only way I'd play for this guy is if I planned to bolt after my second year. Les could teach me a thing or two about chasing dollars.

Quick, someone ask Mike Hart if Les is still a "Michigan Man."

Miles will stay at LSU, working out new contract

    ESPN.com news services

    Updated: December 1, 2007, 1:50 PM ET

ATLANTA -- LSU coach Les Miles will remain the school's football coach rather than consider a move to Michigan, athletic director Skip Bertman said Saturday.

"Coach Miles and the chancellor have already worked out a contract that they're happy with, but it hasn't been signed yet," Bertman said.

The announcement came less than three hours before the Tigers (No. 7 BCS, No. 5 AP) played No. 14 Tennessee in the Southeastern Conference championship game.

Saturday morning, ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit reported that Miles had accepted the job at Michigan. Herbstreit also reported that Georgia Tech defensive coordinator and interim head coach Jon Tenuta would go with him.

LSU associate athletic director Herb Vincent said Saturday morning that ESPN reports that Miles had accepted the head coaching position at Michigan were "inaccurate."

Miles, who played at Michigan and served two stints as an assistant under the late Bo Schembechler, has been eyed as a successor to Lloyd Carr, who stepped down after the Wolverines' loss to Ohio State last month.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

That's what happens when you let a non-journalist talking head like Herbie break stories.

Kirk has some major egg on his face. If there is one coach you don't want to tick off it's Miles. He's no "aww shucks I forgive now gimme a hug" fella like Mack Brown. Dude was pissed at his impromptu press conference...although he didn't name Kirk. ESPN milked this report this morning. I want to see Kirk squirm.

PS - Not only did Kirk report Miles to Michigan, he also reported Miles selected Tenuta as his DC. I'm trying picture Tenuta celebrating watching ESPN this morning.

I'd guess ESPN was mostly accurate and that Miles had agreed to basic terms with Michigan, and then LSU gave a better offer and Miles changed his mind. These reports don't come out of nowhere.

If Miles had no intention of leaving in the first place, he could have said that last week instead of waiting until the morning of the SEC championship game.

Are you all talking about Kirk Herbstreit? Is he the one who broke the story?

I won't believe he's staying until the ink is on the contract.
