Two points. First, in the vast majority of NBA games (regular season, non series-clinching playoff games), there is no such perceived obligation. Second, every NBA player isn't even expected to do so. Would anyone being paying any mind if it was Mo Williams or Delonte West or Zydrunas Ilgauskas that walked off the court? No. LeBron chose to walk off, but there were other Cavs that stayed behind to deliver the token "congrats" to the winner. Why isn't that enough?

Wrong. LeBron purposely did not want to shake hands.

The point is that they are required to be available to the media after a game. It's part of the job description.

All the active players will stick around and say congrats to the winning team? Didn't realize that.

This just goes to show that Lebron is greater than everyone else, because they lost the series and LEBRON NOT SHAKING HANDS gets way more press than the orlando magic lol

Who cares that orlando is in the finals, LEBRON DIDNT SHAKE HANDS!!!!! lol

    Long live the KING

Lebron wants a championship and going to NY will not grant him this reward.

So I predict Lebron will be signing to a team who can give it to him.

And that team is the "Houston Rockets!"

    Book it.

So the league fined Rasheed Wallace for showing up at the press conference and said "Both teams played hard" but didn't fine Lebron for not showing up the press conference?
Don't tell me Mo Williams showed up the press conference so Lebron need not to. Sorry, everywhere i read was all about LEBRON's CAVS not William's CAVS or MIKE BROWN's CAVS, so what people wanted at press conference was Lebron James not Mo williams or Mike Brown.
You are pissed because you lost and didn't want to shake opponents' hands because you are a winner? Sorry, you are CHILDISH!

James' explanation for why he didn't congratulate Orlando was pretty ridiculous. McGrady thinks LeBron said something stupid. And why is he calling himself a "winner"? I don't think I've ever heard that before. Even more odd, considering he doesn't have any rings.

durv- I find you to be a pretty rational guy for the most part, but I think for some reason you are choosing the opposite side of an argument for the sake of it.

No, all players do not congratulate the other team after losing. But the star player after a hard fought playoff series do majority of the time, especially at the end of series (elimination game). Nevermind the fact that he didn't do it on the court, but to not even provide some comment to the press giving some sort of the credit to the magic via the press is definitely not normal. Of course, it would not be as big of a deal if the role players pulled this, because most of the time the national media doesn't care what role players think.

Apologies in advanced if I am completely off-base.

No, I honestly think people are making too big a deal out of it. If a player is acting like an ass during the game, throwing elbows, taunting, etc. -- too me that's classless. That's something to be criticized.

Killing a guy who just suffered a crushing defeat and was obviously extremely disappointed and just wanted to get away, to me, is unnecessary. Yeah, he'd be a bigger person if he "manned up" and congratulated the other team. But not doing so isn't a reason to hate him for it.

Agreed hate is excessive. I'd say it was unexpected for a player of his caliber and that is pretty much it. When his career is over, this will hardly be remembered and will not keep me, or anyone else from diminishing his accomplishments because he stormed off.

Hell did anyone see shaq in the first 2 games of the finals vs the mavs when he was on the heat?

What happens on the court, stays on the court. When the game ends you shake hands, simple. What LeBron did wasn't wrong, but it wasn't right either.

A lot of people (not me) think just the opposite. They perceive players who do those things on court are "competitive."

Elsewhere I was talking about double standard giving LeBron a pass. Someone replied that of course there was double standard because LeBron was such a badass player who just had an all-time great playoffs performance.

You see, double standard goes both ways. He is tauted to be the MODEL of NBA superstar. He is supposed to be classy and well-liked by everybody. Now he pulled this after the loss. It is just natural that people are disappointed. Like I said earlier, if you want to be worshiped in public, then you'd better be prepared to be held to a higher standard. Wanting the glory but not the responsibility is just immature.

Who the heck said anything about hate?? If it was Yao Ming, I'd say the same thing- poor sportsmanship. Doesn't make me hate him, I just see him for what he is- a great player who has some growing up to do.

There are others here, and elsewhere, that are expressing hatred.

I think the only beef I have with Lebron about this is that he embraces the stardom and role....the role of kids looking up to him and calling him a role-model - and he does this.

It's a really bad example for kids.

I personally don't care. But if I was a parent and my child a fan of LeBron, I'd have to sit him down and talk about why what he did was a mistake.

You don't have to shake hands after a loss this isn't a rule.

I don't get why people is making a big deal out of this. The man just loss a chance to play in the finals he was mad at the time and didn't fell like being around anyone. I don't blame him for heading to the locker room right after the game after this type of loss. Now I could see if Lebron did this all the time like after every loss, but this was a tough thing for him to swallow.
