JVG holds an option for another year. It's already been said it was JVG's decision not to talk about an extension until after the playoffs. Obviously he's gambling on the Rockets advancing far in the playoffs for better leverage when they do sit down and discuss $$$.
With a team having two top 10 or even arguably top 5 players in the league, the coach's job can only be secured by playoff success. And I am afraid the bar of success for the coming playoff is pretty high. His job will be secured only if we can reach the western final. I don't think we will see JVG on the sideline of the Rockets team next season with another 1st round exit or a poor 2nd round showing.
this series will decide JVG's fate imo I'm a big JVG guy, but as long as Yao and/or T-Mac don't go down, we should win this series. If we don't, JVG probably should be let go (that is hard for me to say!). If we win the series and either win or are competitive in Round 2, then I think JVG should come back.
Like I said before, the only way JVG's job is secured is if he brings home a ring. That's the reality of business. Maybe making it to the finals would do. But to be sure, it has to be a ring. If JVG had won a ring before - he'd have gotten a contract extension. The very fact he didn't get one indicates he's being evaluated by these playoffs.
I am surprised! Really - I still think Van Gundy is in a very secure position. The players still listen to him. I believe he will be extended 3 years.....
Please help me understand this. You assert that Van Gundy must get a ring - a championship to secure his job here?????
