IMO, Glenn Robinson is Mo Taylor only older, slower, more expensive and less team oriented. Didn't we learn anything from the Rice fiasco? Why do I have visions of ISO-Mania with Glenn2 anchored to the 3 point line? This would be putting a band-aid on a deep knife gouge and totally eliminating any hope for a ball movement offense, improved fastbreak opportunities and playing some team lock down D. Is there anyone here who thinks Robinson is going to put fans in the seats of the new arena?
Woah, Only 2 more years....this might be a better deal then we think guys. Having him here for basically a one year trial period, then he would have an expiring contract and we could move him if he does not work out. Who are the significant Free agents in 2004-5....Kobe anyone? DD
It's better to let Rice's contract expire in Houston rather than in Atlanta. At least then the Rockets can go after REAL commodity players through free agency.
Hot, They won't be able to use all 9 million because of luxury tax concerns, also when is the last time a BIG NAMED free agent changed hands without a trade? Shaq? DD
Everything is relative. Until we shop around, we won't exactly know what Rice's expiring contract is worth, but it's worth more than some people think. Im not a big Glen Robinson fan. He seems to be a moody malcontent. At this stage of his career, he may not be willing to accept being a 3rd wheel with less shots. Also, his defense is atrocious and our defense isn't strong enough to overcome his weaknesses.
This is just a Chad Ford fantasy speculation ... just want to make sure that's clear since a couple people sounded like it was real (though pretty much everyone else understood). I agree wholeheartedly with MManal. Getting players who just have to have the ball to be effective is a recipe for disaster for this team. Glen Robinson is a taller, more offensively talented version of Cuttino Mobley. Remember, Ray Allen accused Robinson of being a big problem in Milwaukee because of his selfish play and poor work ethic. This is the veteran presence we want? I don't see how he is much of a solution to our problems. This does highlight though once again that Glen Rice became valuable the second this past season was over, and he'll get more valuable with each passing game in the season next year. We could be in a very good position to acquire a good-to-great player with a fat contract on a team looking to start over/rebuild -- if that's the route we choose to take. I agree also with Deuce - we need a third All-Star caliber player, and personally I think that player should be at the four. I'd really like to see the Rockets land a tough, bust-ass PF. I still believe Elton Brand is just a pipe dream, but it will all depend on what the Clippers do. I do know the Clippers are for sure one of the teams of interest for the Rockets this season, or potential targets. Odom, Miller and Brand all could be attractive to the Rockets. Some people swear that Sterling wants to scrap it all to pursue Duncan and Kidd, while others say they will sit back and try to get back their players on the cheap. While I don't think SG and PF would be the Clippers' positions of need, I do think the contracts of Mobley and Griffin could be desirable if it ever gets to that point. No inside information there really, just my speculation. We'll see.
I really like Odom, I believe he can be a threat if he joins this team. He drives and passes well, much like an un-selfish Cuttino and sees the floor better. But we do need help at the pf so Odom wouldnt be the best choice
MManal, that is the kicker! See as I understand it, if Brand signs the 1 year tender offer then that is it....NO Sign and trades after that. That is the scenario that Kandi is in now. What this means is, if the Clippers want to get someting for Brand, they HAVE to do it THIS summer or else he takes the 1 year tender, plays for the clippers next year and then is an unrestricted FA. Once Brand signs that tender offer they cannot sign and trade him. So, like you said, it ups the odds a bit for the Rockets and for anyone that wants to make a bid for Brand. The Clippers will watch Kandi walk away for nothing this summer. Perhaps as they watch that they can decide if they want to do the same thing with Brand (and Odom and Maggette and Richardson etc) next summer. The Clippers do not want to pay large contracts. They are in the market for players that have decent talent and have decent contracts and decent lenghts. In other words, Griffin and Mobley fit in this category as would draft picks etc.
It would be great if we can land a deal with the clips for any of those 3 guys. THough....brand....does seem like a dream.
Clutch, I'm personally not interested in Robinson, but I am interested in your take, and some of the others on the board, about whether Posey can play the 2. He's been penciled in there in some of these scenarios and I can't remember JP playing much at that spot. Is he a reasonable possibility at SG if he's resigned and Cat is moved? Or is he good for spot minutes there depending on matchups and that's it. I've been curious.
I know this thread is about Glen Robinson...but one more "Brand related' post here... The key for getting Brand is getting his agent David Faulk on board with what we want to do. Have him pressure the Clippers into making the trade. All Faulk has to do is tell the Clippers that he wants the Max for Brand from the Clippers. The Clippers of course will say no, you are crazy. Then Faulk says fine, either you work out a sign and trade with a team like the Rockets or Brand is not signing ANY offersheat this offseason from any teams (fearing that the Clippers will match the offer and Brand will be stuck in Clipperland) and is taking the 1 year tender offer from you and then he will leave via FA next year when he is an unrestricted FA. If you sign and trade him now at least you can get something for him. Look what happend to Kandi. Do you want to lose a second talented player for nothing? Nuff said!
Interestingly we have a good rapport with Mr Faulk thanks to the way we dealt with MoTay. MoTay is happy in Houston and I am sure Faulk is aware of that. But the down side is that Faulk will not like to include Motay in the deal. No sweat the Clipps don't really want Motay since they have those 2 rookie (soon to be soph) power forwards.
Robinson's a bad seed. I mean do people forget why he was traded to Atlanta in the first place? I personally wouldn't take him.
Yup! All the better. This franchise has a good reputation of taking care of players. We gave Taylor a fat contract after he signed as a FA for us on cheap and did the same with Shandon via the trade with Rice. If Faulk wants it to happen, it will happen! The guy is one of the most influential agents in the NBA. Francis+Yao+Brand = young all star talented nucleus + Role Players = players that compliment the star's games ________________ = Championship Team!
I was really peeved when I read Ford this AM. I hoped he either was way off or I feared that Rudy might actually be thinking this way. The latter scares me more than believing Ford is that screwed up. Robinson is talented -- but not on an NBA squad as he has demonstrated throughout his career. As to PD Brand (Pipe Dream) I hold onto the pipe dream that Falk will deliver the goods (and find Rox a new home for MoT -- who could be an excellent 6th man-type if his salary wasn't all-star type). I just do not see a scenario with the Clips that doesn't revolve around Cat. That pipe dream is Mobley holds the key to Clips long-term signing Odom.
Glenn Robinson reminds me a bit of Antoine Walker. Both have solid games. Helluva lot better then over cooked Rice.
Deuce, Assuming this info about the Clipps not being able to sign and trade Brand if he takes a tender offer is correct, then that would increase the Rockets chances a good bit imo. In addition to Mobley and Griffin who have contracts the Clippers would like, Bostjan Nachbar is also another one that would fit well into what the Clippers want. I'd like to keep Nachbar, but for Brand you gotta do whatever it takes outside of Yao and Francis. Nachbar is pretty close with Marko Jaric who appears to be ready to move into Miller's spot once he leaves. Mobley is close with Odom as well, should be interesting. The Rockets have the types of pieces the Clippers would want, it is a matter of using some arm twisting by Faulk and such to get something done. If by some chance the Rockets do pull this off, then its just a matter of filling up the backcourt with savvy vets and letting Francis take on a scoring role.
