I think in the end JVG kind of messed up. He was offered a contract during the season, and he turned it down. He should've accepted the contract. He'd still be the coach.
van gundy has winning teams and excellent defenses wherever he goes. it's pretty hysterical that people think he can't get a coaching job anytime he decides to. he follows in line with hubie brown and doug collins as coaches who translate really well to broadcasting.
JVG is the ultimate pessimist and seems like the kind of guy who'll predict outcomes that go against his wishes. So I guess we can surmise that, deep down, he hopes the Rockets don't do well this year. Did that thought cross anyone else's mind?
wow the negativity never stops...so he thinks a 52 win team if healthy with great additions may win more this year...yeah that is a real stretch. they had the 5th best record in the league last year...why wouldnt they be better this year.
His takes makes complete sense. But, if I was in his position, there's no way in hell I'd have anything but glowing praise for the Rocket's prospects. Because if I expressed any doubts about them, and they turn out to be great, what does that make me look like? This way, if the Rockets do well, it's what he predicted, and if they don't, he's vindicated. Win-win. It's cynical, I admit, but that's the immediate impression I got after reading his comments.
JVG's great with the media, and he knows how to play the PR game. He's a smart man. I think it was Silas who bashed the Cavs after he left, and they only got better under Mike Brown.
I love Jeff talking since his Knicks days though he is not the most creative coach on earth and not the best coach for Rox. He is dry funny and pretty straightforward. He believes what he says. His perspective is usually unique and professional. That's why most fans love him. I'm just one of them. He is good for TV...
Yes. He's very stubborn, too much for his own good. Stubborness is a good trait but if you are excessively stubborn, it can be self-destructive. Think it: If JVG lowered his ego just a little, and signed that contract, he'd still be the coach for the Rockets! I read about the part where he said, ABC rescued him from the darkest days of his professional career. I felt pretty bad for him after reading that. JVG did not deserve to be fired like that. He did a great job. Personally, I miss JVG as our coach, but I know that Adelman will do things differently that might lead to more success. So I look forward to the new season. But I can't help but feel a little sad for JVG also. He could get an NBA head coach job if he wanted, but he'll never be coaching for Yao or T-Mac again.
JVG was not feeling "dark" because he got fired. He agreed to be a guest analyst on ESPN/ABC before he even got fired. He was "dark" because he was still recovering from the series loss to Utah. We were oh so close. I still haven't recovered from it. Heck, I still haven't recovered from Stockton hitting that 3 against us. JVG's pain was 100 times worse than mine at the time.
you are missing the point. He wanted to be judged on the results of the season. Accountability. I wish he would have resigned too but jvg will never overstay his welcome and les just didnt welcome him anymore...mostly for PR reasons. He did do a great job considering, and it would have been great to see him with a team with this much talent and depth.
