That's the reason why Sir Charles kissed the donkey's rear after Yao scoring 20 points vs. the Fakers... I can imagine a political backlash if he didn't honor his words...

If it wasn't for Alabama and South Carolina also, Texas would be dead last in a lot of health, education and welfare categories.

See, the thing is that he means well. He does have the capability to get elected and can definitely have impact on things like education. Plus, the state constitution of Alabama REALLY needs reform. It's the oldest in the country and still has some bad language in it (though many, many, many amendments). For more on the Alabama constitution, go here.

His way may not be the best way, but he can get it done (as long as he and other people keep telling him he can do anything...and you know they will because, at the very least, it would be soooo entertaining to watch).

And, not that it matters to anyone here, can you imagine a ****ing sick, sick subhuman like Roy Moore being governor?!?! I guarantee Roy Moore is one of whom Barkley was referring to when talking about Republicans losing their minds.

It's probably a good thing for Barkley that gambling is illegal in Alabama. :D

(oh, and this thread probably should be moved)

    Mr. Mooch, I agree.

WTF does Barkley wanting to be Governor have to do with Game Action And Roster Moves?

I don't want to lose Sir Charles on the halftime shows. I wonder if he could be governor and still do the shows with Kenny and Ernie.

Please don't insult Sir Charles by comparing him to the terminator.

What does Hakeem being in town in some mosque have to do with GARM? Nothing. But it's Rockets related and that's always been the de facto rule of whether or not a thread stays.
Not my call but I saw it's relevant.

First, I am not and never have been a real Barkley fan...

I did, however, have some hopes when he came here simply because of his rebounding ability and his unique and legendary style of backing into the basket and banking and scoring, but I think his showboating presence off the court, in the locker room, and with the media, diminished the effectiveness of Hakeem`s team leadership both on and off the floor, disrupted the tone and chemistry of the team that was there, shortened Clyde`s last years, and may have caused enough division and distraction to have kept us from a 3rd championship. I loved that we picked up Kevin Willis as a secondary result of that trade, but regret that we lost Horry and Cassell...

While I support his right to do so, appreciate his love for his home state, and would certainly be in favor of Alabama having a competent black Governor, Barkely for Governor is a joke as he is so completely incompetent and utterly unqualified that it is scary that people might actually consider him electable!

Sir Charles is certainly opinionated and has the right intentions, but he's never struck me as the brightest guy in the world. I think he could be elected. He said on PTI the other day that he thought his chances were about 65% and that sounds about right. But I'd have a hard time believe that he could be effective as Governor and elevate Alabamas status. Of course, Clinton marginally elevated Arkansas and he became president so what do I know.

I felt a great disturbance in the force ... did you just use the word "education" and a reference to Charles Barkley in the same sentence?

Olajuwon being in Houston is, to a limited extent, Rockets news. There's always the theory that maybe he'll come coach Yao. Farfetched and ridiculous, sure, but at least to some small degree there's that connection.

I was going to weigh on this, but you said everything for me. Our only disagreement is your first line, I have always been a fan of how he played (okay, not much defense) in the NBA. He was a relentless rebounder, and played hard every night. I got to see him play when he was at Auburn and have enjoyed his game ever since.

Barkley for governor is a joke. It is a huge undertaking to run a state government, it is similar to running a large company. What makes him qualified?

Arnold the Governator had many advantages over Barkley. It would seem similar but really the comparison isnt so close in terms of definition of governor/politication.

Arnold has Maria Shriver as a wife who was/is very respected in what she does and she has ties to probably the most famous U.S. political family ever in the Kennedys. Also, bad quotable lines from movies aside and his thick accent, Arnold actually does speak the language in more proper, eloquent manner unlike Barkley. He was able to play the game within the rules already layed out. Barkley would have to have all the rules thrown out the door. Also Arnold did go in knowing more than bare minimum politics and did his 'homework' where as Barkley speaks common sensible big broad conclusions (which i like) and is totally reliant on charisma... That might be the quality that they want though so who knows....

Barkley for governor would be close to a joke really... Keep in mind his 'platform' is a bit different from other celebrity turned politicians. The others wanted to perform the task of governor the way it was already set up and had interests close to what regular politicians have. Barkley wants to help poor people specifically young black people. So in that sense he might if they want that he would not have to play the game the same way...It'd be fun to see him run, though! And the Jesse the Body thing was way out of left field....

My reaction when I saw this thread was, "why is this in the GARM?" It's funny, I KNOW Charles was a Rocket (I've been a Rox fan since about '70), but I still don't really THINK of him as having been a Rocket. He doesn't FEEL like a Rocket. (Do you KNOW what I MEAN?)

It's the dog days. Maybe I could make this subject into its own thread somehow... :|

    (Sorry. Carry on.)
