This fool should have been banned from the league and let go....that way he can do what he wants with his damn life and get arrested and stay in jail for the crap he does.
The issue I have is the NFL and pro sports are quasi-private enterprises. They have special protections from monopoly laws and against open competition (not to mention they get substantial public funding for stadiums and such). I think those protections should be taken away if they so willi nilli interfer with their employees off company time activities. That way if someone wants to start a pro football team in x city with x thugs and compete with other teams with other rules, so be it.
It's not a legal thing, just it'll backfire badly WHEN they get it wrong with someone. If the NBA had this, they'd get it right by nailing Stephen Jackson and Ron Artest, but is it right if they suspended Kobe when he got trapped by that gold digging drugged up psycho? If the language states that this is a "Bad Press" punishment....okay. They could say this about players putting themselves in positions that hurt the league and I can accept it. If it's simply being used to punish players for something they MAY have done......that's shady and guaranteed to backfire eventually. Evan
well the difference with those instances is that no one knows what really happend with kobe, meanwhile there is video footage of the others. BUt i know what you mean, there is a line to balance. I think the most important aspect is whether or not the player has re-occuring problems with the law.
John McClain was actually right about something. He said during the meetings that the rumor was Pacman getting a one year suspension.
I hardly think the NBA or any professional sports league is going to jump the gun on any alleged incident. If these were first time incidents, there is no way we'd be hearing about a year long suspension (barring a serious felony). These guys were suspended for their history of run in's with the law and the seriousness of their crimes. It is not simply about bad press. They don't want to promote a league with thugs and guys of serious questionable character. I don't want to see those types of people be given the chance to be in such a successful postion because in my opinion, they don't deserve it because they will abuse it, which they clearly do. No one is perfect. Guys will continue to screw up and I'm sure they will be punished accordingly. And if they continue to screw up like Pacman, they'll be punished harshly.
Can't say I am fan of all things about that either. Think about it the NFL Players Union and the League (NCAA may have lobbied too) all worked together to screw over the next generation of players. Superstar athletes can blow out their knees at 20 with nothing to protect their or their families financial interests. You can die in war, get the death penalty, but noooooo you can't play in the NFL even if 30 out of 30 teams would gladly draft you and pay you millions like yesterday. I think it all is un-American in premise the way the Leagues have special protections from competition unlike other industries and they way they opperate, including with Unions who primarily represent later generation of players' interests. Not saying there are not loopholes and legaility behind those organizations doing those things--just that it is wrong and un-American.

Suspension means NO PAY. Also, you mention he'll be sittin' on the sidelines; well, he won't be on the sidelines or the practicing facilities. A suspension is NOT that fun. He's denied any NFL-related activites.
I don't think what he's done warrants this kind of suspension, but it's needed in the way that the player's are now pretty much FUBAR'd for any idiotic things they do off the field. I mean, if they are going to do stupid things and get arrested, that not only hurts them through suspensions but also hurts their team that might have been a contender if their players weren't so jacked in the head (i.e. Bengals) and it hurts the fans that pays money to see their teams. NFL might becoming more and more like the No Fun League that people tag it to be, but this is much needed.
Speaking of someone doing something stupid. Warren Moon gets arrested for drunk driving. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/football/nfl/04/10/bc.fbn.moondui.ap/index.html
